Sorry guys I think you missed my point in the question I was asking is there a need for both the tracker and the watch
i know the tracker edits your gopro for you but also has all the readings that the watch does.
so would you use both items or just one over the other
As an owner of the search GPS watch, and having just watched a couple of tracker movies - I do like the tracker if you want lots of details, and for the GoPro editing feature (big time saver - but Mac only...), and for the resolution (it appears to record GPS positions more frequently because the wave information is far more detailed than with the Rip Curl watch). The Trace has to be mounted on the board, so having a watch is far more convenient. And I have to confess to checking the watch after a good wave to see how fast I went (however it will only tell you if it was your fastest). And I like the wave count on the watch.
(How is your eye-sight? I find that some of the most useful information, like the current time and session length, are too small to read on the watch face.)
Depending on your application, you might like to throw the new Garmin camera into the mix. I don't think it counts waves, but it does record a lot of useful info and overlays it on the vid.
