There's a used JL Stun Gun I'm maybe interested in, anyone have any thoughts on how this board would work in beach break waves that are ~overhead to double but mixed quality, mix of mushy and steep, some back off and hard to get into early. I would get the 8'7". Have channel to paddle out. Looking for something that gets in earlier (and less energy to balance) than 8' performance shape but handles drops better than performance longboard. Thanks

I've watched a guy do really well with a stun gun even though it was oversized for him. The tail is pretty thin and pointy and it handles bigger and steeper drops well. I really like the look of the shape for bigger surf.

I went plus 8 inches length and 10 liters on my step up custom board and it worked out really well for me, although of course l feel the size increase in turning speed.

For conditions you describe stun gun will definitely work, even if it isn't ideal all the time. You might be glad to have it for the big hollow ones that come thru.

Deffo a big wave machine..I think the fin configuration is spaced out for some size and rocker too. I've not surfed one though

Thanks guys. Slsurf - what shaper did your custom step-up if you don't mind sharing - I'd be curious to do like a 9x27 or 9x28 if I was going to do a custom, but this would be my third board purchase of 2023 so I think I gotta go cheap used board. Lol the one here is in rough shape. While I don't like the 29.5" width of Stun Gun that's for sale, it would make it easier to push my comfort zone in wave size if I wasn't wobbling, the combo definitely makes it a little tricky.

Stun Guns work...really well in good surf and smaller crappy surf...had the 8.7 and 9.2 over a few years and just bought another 9.2 in really good condition for $700 with new bag and paddle. One of the best looking sups ever made and the construction is brilliant.

The stun gun does seem wide but the outline is so curvy it might be a little deceptive, probably feels more like a narrower board.

I got my custom step up from l41 it's a Bruce Wayne round pin 8'4 actually 10 inches up from my smaller l41 (I said 8 in prev.) I'll often use the step up as a stability option, or if I'm feeling unsure of a spot.

I'll try and post a pic of the board to show how different the outline is to a stun gun

That sounds like a great deal! This one's cheap but needs new deck pad

Yeah kind of a funny name for a surfboard, not sure what the backstory is on that.

I've had the 8'7 for a few years. I think it surfs really well in wide range of wave sizes. And it can handle some size too. Bulletproof construction.

For me, it's a keeper.

I have a 8.7 JL Stun Gun in both glass and carbon edition for a few years now. Although it is somewhat designed for bigger surf, I found it to be quite nimble with decent glide on smaller mushy stuff. I live in Hawaii so we have an array of surf and conditions so I feel I can speak confidently about the capabilities of this board.

Yes, the stun gun preforms best in larger surf where you can set you line/rails in step faces while remaining 100% confident on its hold and drive. Stun gun can be surfed mid board unlike most sup as the rails tapers off quickly from the thicker belly/standing area. The further you step back towards the tail, V kicks in and the board really lights up. I also found that it is also fun in smaller less critical stuff, but there may be better boards suited to deal with those types of conditions. If you are looking at this board as a quiver killer, I believe its a viable option. Hands down best construction out there in terms of strength to weight ratio.

Fairly stable board despite the lack of volume in the pin nose and tail which is almost non- existent. But, thats definately what you want for a high performance sup. Im 6.1 230 lbs and fairly comfortable with the 110 liters as JL distributes the weight on the stun gun so well.

You cant go wrong.
