G'day all,
I'm looking for some feedback on the 8'6" x 30.5" Jimmy Lewis Super Frank lean. I'm about 95kg and currently on a 9'2" x 30" JP Surf Pro (136L) which I still regard as a great board and a keeper for me. I am just looking to go a bit shorter without loosing stability. It would be great to hear from anyone with experience on the super frank lean.

Hi KenM,
That is the beauty of the Super Frank you can go much shorter but retain your stability...I just had a 100kg guy drop back the 8'0 wide Super Frank who is coming off a 9'4 All Wave & is going to go the 8'6 Lean... He had no problem with the 8'0 but only gets out a couple of times a week...

G'day Jimmy Lewis Boards,
I'm keen to get some more feedback on this board and maybe even get a few waves on one. What's the availability of a demo on this board? I'm just south of the Gong but can travel if required.

I have not tried the Super Frank, but I recommend a lot this kind of outline: wide in the front yields surprising stability gains without being a lot more cumbersome. And the somewhat pulled in tail makes it handle the power. The Super Frank should work great in most conditions.

Yeah Colas, that is what I am looking for, hopefully there are some Super Frank Lean users out there that can give me that style of feedback.

Thanks for that micko4. Is that the 8'x 30" 115L? I'm pretty keen on the 8'6" lean board. I'll have to get my act together and organise a demo with Jimmy Lewis Boards.

Yeah Bowerboy I have had a flat water paddle on the 8' x 31.5" 127L and while it was ok it was a little more sluggish than I'd like to paddle. The 8'6" x 30.5" 130L appeals to me. I'm keen to understand how moving the wide point forward (compared to my 9'2" JP Surf Pro) affects surfing performance.

For those that have ridden the JP Surf Wide Body, how does the Super Frank compare? I have a 7'4" Wide Body, and it is stable enough for me (77kg) but seems to yaw side to side pretty easily when paddling for a wave.

I have not ridden either of them :-) but I have ridden various boards of various shapes

The traditional "widebody" style boards have a lot of curve in the outline, thus they yaw very easily. The advantage is that it is easier to initiate a turn on the wave without having to properly engage the rail, or move your foot on the tail, even in weak waves. It is also easier to adjust the trajectory during a turn. The drawback is that they have a lot of row effect, paddle slower (they are wider to compensate the unstability of the narrow tips), and can be unstable at speed.

"wide everywhere" shapes (Tomo, longboard) have more parallel rails and have the opposite qualities/defaults. And pulling the wide point forward like the superfrank may also make the rails a tad more parrallel, straightening the rail curve in the rear half of the board.

As always, they are just different compromises.

Mine is the 8'6 by 32 inch 141 litres. I find it catches waves easily provided I stand slightly forward of the handle.

Great board, I find it surfs really well with a darche drive quad set up.

Cool fin setup.
I surfed my SF at long reef last Friday. Was about head high in the afternoon. The SF is the first board where I feel so in control but able to drive and turn like I have never been able to do before.

Great to hear that you guys are happy with your JL Super Frank Heavy boards. Maybe it is worth me giving one a demo in a bit of surf. I'm still keen on the lean model but there doesn't seem to be many lean owners out there willing to comment.

I suspect the 8'6" SF Lean would be a great board for someone your size. I weigh 93kg and have the 8' x 30" SF Lean (115l). I love the board, it rips on waves but it is a small board at my size. It's fine for smooth conditions but I sometimes wish for the 8'6" Lean model for a little more comfort standing around and a bit more glide for catching small waves. I'd also love to hear from someone who has ridden the 8'6" Lean as I suspect it may be a great board for larger riders.

I've had the 7'6 Wide Super Frank (115L) in demo & have been riding it all summer (sooo easy to jump back on especially after spending way to much time on my foil board) but I just christened the 7'6 Lean (100L) & absolutely love it... Hardly any difference in stability but just that extra performance by going narrower....It's the most fun on small waves I've had on a short sup....

I am not sure there are many. This is one of the most seriously underrated boards out there, across every measure, but for some reason other brands have a much higher profile. I am so glad I found it!

Today I had a demo on the 8' wide. Im 83kg and coming off a 8'10,131lt Sunova flow. This board really suprised me with how light it is compared to the flow and just as or even more stable. But once I caught my first wave I was frothing at the performance of the board. Fast and loose and plenty of drive even in mushy 2 ft waves. Super fun board, cant wait to get it in clean conditions, Im sold.

I really don't need another board but the SF intrigues me based on my usual conditions, I'd probably go with the 7'6" or 8' lean (I'm 175 lbs - 78 kg or so). I have a 7'4" JP Surf Wide I made a trade on, it's fun, but tends to yaw pretty bad left/right on paddling into a wave, anyone who's ridden both, care to compare?

Hi All, thought I would drop a line on my experience of the new Super Frank 7'6 Lean - in short, absolutely love it!!!! Went from a Striker 9'5 to the 7'6 SF Wide (115L) - currently weigh 82kg. Got the board about 3 months ago- for the first few weeks didn't like it as much, kept falling in and found what everyone else was experiencing going from a long to a shorter board with the front-back tippy feel - takes time to find that sweet spot. Anyway after a week away in Hat Head and catching waves every day I realised the potential of a small board with nice easy turns on the wave and why I wanted a smaller board. I have come back wanting something smaller again in litres as I have got use to the amazing stability of the board for it's size. I wondered if the 7'6 lean (100 litres) would be the way to go! Good news my mate loved this board so sold it to him and took the risk of buying the less volume version. Only been out on it once since I got it 2 days ago and was ideal as it was very choppy and keen to know if I could use this comfortably in those conditions - for some weird reason I found it easier than the 7'6 wide - perhaps its lower to the water or the plane of the board is easier to get going, I don't know but I love it! Anyway for whatever size of Super Frank you should get don't doubt the stability as the design is amazing and the tail is still narrow for turning, unlike the Hypernut! Awesome board - I hope by next year Jimmy will make an ultra lean version as I would get one lol!
