Yesterday I popped into CanoesPlus in Kew to buy a Pelican cas for my iPhone and noticed that they new sell sup boards.. It's taken them a while to catch on..

Their boards looked nice (not quite your Naish or starboard but pretty cheap) and not a brand that I've seen before.. I took some pics.

I think we might see more kayak'ers and canoe'ers learning to standing up..

Mick Di Betta / Lahui Kai has been selling the SUP ATX for about a year. They are great for river and lake cruising and I have ridden them in small surf. They are good fun and great entry level boards.

I didn't have a tape measure with me but they did look a bit narrow but for light people or kids that won't be such an issue.. It's also a good shop for anyone looking at buying a PFD.

If the friend just wanted a board to trash and didn't intend to develop skills and stick with the sport, then sure, one of these boards might fit the bill. But for anyone mildly serious just starting out, would you honestly recommend one of these instead of a second hand Naish Mana or Glide or a Starboard Drive? I wouldn't in all conscience. The name brand is going to be re-sellable once they get past the early days. These ones? Forget it.

I also think the purchase of these boards quite probably goes against the mantra of every other SUP recommendation, namely demo demo demo. So where and how are you going to demo these boards? I don't expect Canoes Plus is going to offer that service. Maybe Mick Di Betta does.

It's the giggle factor that we are after in SUP.
Seeing families on the water having fun is whats it about, lets not forget that.
If a cheaper board allows families to have a good time and some memories that last a lifetime, Nothing wrong with that.
