Hi Reddog, just recently I was looking for exactly the same thing. I was planning on buying a 12'6 as I thought it would be more practical for what I needed, I demoed a few different 12'6 boards over a couple of months and was just narrowing the selection down until I tried a 14'.
The 14' was so much better in the flat water and the most people I spoke to recomended a 14 for downwinders.( I am yet to give downwinding a go)
I just recently bought a second hand DC14 from the for sale section as I didnt want to lash out over $2000 for a new board and not get the use out of it.
So far I am loving the DC, I have been getting up at 5am each morning and doing 6-8 klms, nothing boosts motivation like a new board to play with!

I Just need to meet up with some people to train with!!

Best advice I was given was "demo, demo, demo"

Hi Reddog
If you are looking NEW them look in to the alround race boards like the Fanatic Falcon in either the 27 or 30 inch or the StarBoard Allstar if for more Downwind then the SIC 14 is very good. If you just want to paddle long distance then yeah go 14 for sure!!
