Which Paddle?

Since getting into SUPS eighteen months ago i have been using my Kialoa Shaka Puu
paddle as an allrounder so before i spend $500 on a surf only paddle is the Methane
that much better?i am 85 kilos.I would appreciate any feedback on surf paddles

Yes there is a difference.
The Methane is a more "nimble" paddle and just as fast in the flats (in the surf).
Your elbows and shoulders will love the difference.

Your wallet and stoke will also thank you if you change completely and go for a Starboard Enduro 475 instead of another Kialoa

There are some great paddles out there now.. Today I saw an awesome looking Fanatic paddle.. The new Starboard and Naish paddles also look very good.. But if you love the oval shape of the Kialoa shaft and their lively/springy feel you will love the Methane.. It's the paddle that I use the most.

Hey DJ,

I just received a few boxes of new Fanatic paddles and I really like the 100% Carbon pro. Quite a stiff shaft with a little give in the blade but not too much, a fairly even flex across the entire length including the blade really. Very light. I'm christening it tomorrow on the river and will write up a review once back in the shop.

I have used the Fanatic 80% carbon paddle previously and found it very comfortable and a pleasure to use. The paddle I have been using over the last cupla weeks wasn't doing it for my style. It was nice to paddle and all, but it failed to get any power down to the water. The shaft had WAY too much flex with a stiff blade for me. I think it may be better suited to more recreational paddling rather than trying to go fast. I won't mention the name of that brand because although not for me, it was a nice paddle and may suit others.

I bought one of the 8", 80% carbon + Bamboo Fanatics (8"), after having tried the 100% carbon and finding it a bit stiff. IMO the carbon one feels a lot like a QB elite, (only half the price). The 80/Bamboo has a very, very nice positive feel, firm but yielding , nice even flex with a little bit of snap, not at all noodly. Gentle on the bod so less fatiguing than my carbon paddles. I put the Garmin on yesterday and went a good bit quicker with it than my (bigger,stiffer) starboard 550. Finish is excellent and a very nice finishing touch is a "startouch-like" grip treatment on the shaft and handle, which gets nice & grippy when wet.
A mate tried my bamboo, he bought one. Another mate tried his, he bought one. Definitely worth a try if you can get your hands on one.

i love my methane for the surf is a wicked paddle and my quickblade for the downwinders

Hey Darren I don't even know what paddle that was that you were using but I couldn't believe how much flex it had when you turned on the pace the other day, from where i was it seemed to take on the shape of a boomerang.

For me looking to buy a paddle this thread has been most helpful. I would like to know approx $ they cost though. Can't bring myself or have the cashola to spend $500-600 on a paddle but would go for the $300-$350 range. Any of the above fit into that range? I want something that would handle both flats and surf, more for recreational than performance

Check out the new Fanatic half carbon, half bamboo.. It's about that price range.. I think?

Also the new carbon/glass paddles are about that price and are also very good.. I recommend the skinny shafts and about the x8" bale size.

No but only because my local shop didn't have them in stock. I'm the same weight as you and I bought the Kanaha all carbon (small) instead and so far really like it. I used to use a Kiakaha (flat blade). I reckon the Slim Jim would be a good surf paddle and worth demoing if you can.

The new Fanatic Paddles are

$199 for 40% Carbon
$279 for 80% Carbon
$459 for Carbon Pro 100%

DJ is right, the 80% would be the pick for you by the sound of it, and under $300

Yep just bought one. Very nice paddle really smooth but powerful. It is still 100 square inches.

Dunno The slim jim at 100 square ins is the same as the Shaka maybe too big for the surf??
