Unfortunately, the conditions did not pan out as predicted on Monday. I went down really early after checking the weather update at 3am - where SSW was predicted for a few hours then S for the rest of the day.
I launched at Flat Rock at 6am, as this was the only safe launching spot (Ballina andf Lennox were ugly). The swell was pretty big (around 6ft+) so I had to be patient to get out. After getting out the back without incident I started the journey...
The swell and wind were crossing at 45 degrees so it was pretty wild out there. My DC14 handled the bad conditions pretty well and I made good progress to Byron (at around 10km/hr). My ground support crew followed me the whole way but I had to make the call to pull the pin at Byron. The wind did not turn to Southerly, as predicted, and it still had too much offshore in it at Byron. It would have been too dangerous to continue with that wind so I came in at Byron. I wanted to stay relatively close to shore the whole way as I only had land support for this venture. I definately did not want to cross the bay alone - even with all of my own comprehensive safety gear (EPIRB/PLB, Flares, VHF radio, Mobile, Whistle, Mirror, PFD, V Sheet, Light, 1st Aid Kit, etc). The safety plan was to hug the coast all of the way and this was not possible with the strong offshore conditions.
Thanks to everyone who has supported me in my goal to do this 100km paddle. Safety always comes first for me so I am pretty happy with my decision to postpone this particular attempt.
Till next time...
