Went on my 1st downwinder this afternoon here in sunny Portland bay. Only about 12-15kts, a few rolls going through. Hardest part was getting out of our harbour with the cross wind & all the fishing boats coming through the mouth. Not a bad day for 2 of us after a 10kt forecast, but 2hrs of solid 15-20kt wind, blasting with big gear - windsurfing/chop-hops this morning.

Aerial pic attached...no vid or photos, maybe next time.

Looking forward to catching more runners next time, not falling in as much and not having to deal with a weedy & rocky shorebreak exit.

Sounds great.. Just wait till you get a solid 25-35 knots.. it's a whole different world then.. What gear were you on?

Naish 11'6" Nalu, and an adjustable carbon QB 8.7 (the one with the FG blade).

As for 25-35kts...I'm not sure if I could do that...and leave my WS gear in the shed! But I'll try.

DJ,
That would be a great launching place some day. Only 90 k's from Torquay, or 1hr 20.

I went there a few weeks back and the drive takes over 4 hours from Melbourne - it's near the freak'n South Australia border - 9 hours return.

I thought the town of Portland was an absolute dump - I base that on ordering fish and chips in a restaurant and getting a plate full of birds eye deep fried crap. Must have gone to the wrong place - but looking around the town, didn't look like very many good meal options around. I hate nothing more than going to a fishing port and the fish of the day is "New Zealand Hake" Give me a fckn break.

Fantastic surfing beaches and options around there though.

Hey sailhack - do you know Brooko?

Correct Adolf Oliver. I was referring to Apollo Bay. The harbour arrangements are similar. (Apollo Bay & Portland - but I now realise that is Portland - my mistake).
