It's on again soon.. very soon.. Wednesday 26th.. (Australia Day) .. So it's less than two weeks away now.. St Kilda beach is a perfect venue for this event.

There is now a new course for the race and there will be slight change in prize money with a donation being made to the Queensland floods.

I'm sure that everyone will be cool with that because anyway we can help is well worth it.. and there will still be heaps of prizes and giveaways.

It's sure to be a fun day and I hope everyone who paddles a SUP in Melbourne will be there.

For more info check out.. www.supb.com.au or phone 0416184994

Thanks DJ, yes that's right!
We will be raising as much money as we can to support our fellow Australians in QLD. Lots of fun activities have been arranged. $10 entry for the main race and we will be asking for a small donation to compete in some of the other races. This is a great opportunity to bring all those unwanted coins or notes to help some very worthy charities!
Some more surprises to be announced very shortly, so stay tuned!

Here's what's happening at the Port Phillip Cup this year.

At 9.30 sharp the women and children (under 16) on boards in the 12'6" (or under) class will start.

At 9.35 the men in the 12'6" (or under) class will start.

At 9.40 all on boards over 12'6" will start.

The first three across the finish line will be first, second and third in the 2011 Port Phillip Cup regardless what gender, age or board.

This staggered start should ease congestion around the first buoy and first crossing under the pier.

The first Male.. The first Female.. and the first under 16 (Male) and under 16 (female) will all win prizes with the new 12'6" Fanatic board being the main prize.

I hope that clears up the rules for how the race will go and I think it's pretty fair and should open it up to all to have a shot at winning.

Also.. There will be a $10 fee to all competitors plus any other gold coin donations accepted.

All funds raised on the day will be split three ways between the St Kilda Life Saving Club.. The St Kilda Penguin people.. and the Queensland Flood relief fund.

See you there.. It's going to be a great day.

Okay so no prizes or acknowledgement of placings in the open (over 12'6") class. Maybe I'll leave the K15 at home.

Don't forget it's all about the fun.. and the participation..

Also.. All the placings and acknowledgment might even go to open (over 12'6").. You never know.. .. We might even get a junior winning it.

You might have to paddle the course on your 12'6" and then on your K15 and see if the K15 is five minutes quicker.

Great idea to do the staggered start and give everyone a chance :-)
For those of us who weren't there last year, do you have a map of the course?

It's changed from last year and Paul has a map to post showing this years course.

I think it's something like this.

Yeah that's close enough DJ. The only thing still to be determined is how far apart the incoming and outgoing passages under the pier will be.

Yeah I'll have to paddle the New 12'6" and then the Pin 12'6" and then the K15 to see which is quicker. Better eat my Weeties first.

Thanks DJ, and just to clarify PT Woody - the over 12'6 class winners receive acknowledge and prizes too, just like the other classes.

So to sum up, first over the line will win the Port Phillip Cup, with a prize for second and third (regardless of board size, gender, age)

Prizes for:
male and female U.16 winners, male and female winners of 12'6 and under, and male and female over 12'6 class.

And don't forget a big prize for the Best Dressed Paddler in the theme of Australia Day!

DJ's map is pretty much spot on for the course for this year. I will be posting the official race copy in the next day or so.

Cheers

Looks like Cam went a little far south west after the jetty. We're no longer going out to that black and white pole. This is the official course map that Mick has posted on the SUPB StKilda website...

Did the new course this evening into a 15 knot southerly with plenty of chop on a Starboard 12'6" New and then a Starboard K15. Strangely enough the times were almost identical - 15 seconds difference with the shorter board faster, albeit that I was no doubt a bit fatigued on the second run on the longer board. So I would ay the 5 minute start is overly generous. The new race course is also only 2.81 km. I completed it in 24:40.

Did the race distance twice again this morning in very light winds and the slightest ripple on the water. This time I ran the K15 first to see if fatigue was the key factor in time difference. The result was a time of 22.11 on the K15 and then a short time later, 22.43 on the 12'6" New.

So factoring in fatigue to both tests, it's fair to say that there is no advantage to a longer board for someone my size. I also think the 5 minute head start for the 12'6" boards over the open class for a race of this distance is overly generous. You could cut that down by half.

I think PTWoody is right. 5 minutes is a long time over such a short course. 1min/km is possibly a more reasonable estimate of a handicap - say 2-3 minutes for the course.

When we agreed on 5 minutes it was just a guess and what happens on the day might change after tests like Paul has done and also the conditions on the day.

The handicap time is there to make for an exciting race with a close finish for all paddlers.. I'm guessing the time might be cut back to about 2 minutes.

Just a slight tweak to the course map shape following my paddle today and after consulting with Mick. This should make the distance about 2.7km.

Hey Woody,

how is the course going to be marked so that everyone knows exactly which turning buoy is which, maybe mark each buoy with red arrow or streamer or balloon and an arrow showing direction to next buoy?

I believe everyone needs to know now what the handicap is going to be as it directly effects board sellection for the day!

The original 5 mins meant a 12'6 was a no brainer 2 minutes for some will make it a 17fter?

Phill.. Don't worry the course will be very clearly marked and they will even have laminated maps for you to stick on your board but it's so simple I'm sure that wont be nessessary.

As far as the exact handicap goes I think even a one minute hanicap may still favor the 12'6" boards.. Remember it's more about the engine than the board anyway.. I think about two minutes is closer to what it should be.. Bigger boards are often heavier and harder to turn and it's the longer distances that you get a benifit from them.

Good plan, just draft him until you get back to the pier.
