Nice one Phill..

Just wondering.. Are you taking any paddle strokes during that 30 seconds? .. How would we know if you did?

You need a better camera angle that shows it better.. I just used a bicycle helmet with my camera mounted to it.

Check out my 40 second runner (without a stroke) .. at about the 1:30 mark in this vid..

I'm on my 14' Glide... It's also built for speed..

If 18 km/h is the bench mark, I guess I have a few boards that are built for speed. And yeah, they're only 14'.

You Melbourne guys are in enclosed waters, DW is surfing open ocean wind swells with larger periods and only 15knots of winds, Totally different Down wind conditions to Port Phillip.

Do you just pray that no one will come along and take the board while you are riding back to the car?? Maybe there are less trusting people in qld but I don't think mine would still be there if I left it for to long at the beach I live at...

Towny, I agree exactly.
DJ & PT - you might be taking Downwinder a little too seriously... I don't know, emotion is a funny thing in typed text!?

Yes, in Downwinder's video you can tell it is barely 15 knots... in DJ's video is probably honking at about 20-25 knots with 30+ knot gusts. Quite different conditions.

Sorry DJ, but Downwinder would have left you in his wake at Burleigh on that day, SIC F18 v Naish 14 anything! (Flame suit on! )

Downwinder, I'm still convinced that the F-18 is built for speed, and is probably the quickest Downwind board, when it's 15 knots in the open ocean... I wish I had one, and an extra garage!

Au contraire, my friend, I don't know that I've ever taken Downwinder too seriously.

But back on topic, someone else said it best - ALL raceboards are built for speed.

Except the F18. It's not built for anything these days.

My 2cents worth
down winding is the same as surfing
There are great waves there are **** waves and everything in between
No matter what board you are on if you get a great wave your stoked
Even if your on a board that's not perfect for that wave or run
You don't give a **** .
There is way to much focus on what board you are riding to get the best or longest runs.
For me a sweet short run on a 10 ' board is as good as if i was on a 14' board
And went 100 times as long.

Oh don't get me wrong, I have certainly paddled a few dogs as you say, but the intention of the designer in building any race board was undoubtedly speed. Whether the designer achieved that intention is the question.

STOKED for ya Rob Munro great vid I've never Downwinded in Winds of 35 - 55 knots. I'd need 2 more people to help me carry my 17'6'' Bullet at the finish. 2 minute Glide is ALL TIME you win hands down. My longest Glide every is around one minute 5 seconds doing a Pai'lolo Channel Crossing in 20 - 25 knots Winds with a 3ft Swell. I was standing so far back on the Bullet SURFING giving one Paddle Stroke every 10 seconds just to stay in the trough

Happy New Year too

just checked, was 98 seconds!

We have't seen many 14+ boards in SA. I think there is 1 x 15' Starboard and a 17' glide. But the Glide doesn't work so well in our conditions.

Would love to try a 16' though..... one day!

I got to try out the Bull Dogs 17'4 SIC Bullet today and even 115kg paddlers with no technique can catch runners on this beast.

The active steering system is something to behold I was able to spin this 17'4 board around and paddle onto a wave in about board length it blew my mind.

Often I found I didnt even know I was on the tiny swell until I saw the buoy behind me disappearing at a great rate of knots.

Stability wise it was all-time, the only time I fell off was when I made a choice to.

Paddled into a 15kn head wind and cross chop was also pretty good.

Looks like an awesome inter island taxi.

One very very schmick piece of engineering.

Thanks for the vid Rob.. I've seen it before but great to see it again.. It looks like you're surfing a standing wave in a river.. Weird.. There's no sensation of moving or of speed.. Why is that?.. and I've been out in those winds heaps but it never looked quite like that.. Must be very off shore wind direction and fairly shallow.. and it looked more like 50-60 knots if not more.. It's weird what the water does in very strong winds and shallow'ish water.. I've seen waist to chest high waves in 30-40 knots get flattened to about a foot high when the wind gusts to around the 60 knot range.. It looks like smoke going across the water.. You would need a very good leash on the board and what ever you do dont let go of your paddle.. Anything like a board or even paddle will not stay on the surface of the water in those winds.

It was a very windy day and we set off from a secluded bay with no ocean swell. We were about 800m out when this video started. It is rather shallow and the wind was dead offshore. We were certainly moving, but it's like a conveyor belt. The guts were super strong but the meters only showed an average wind speed of a lot less. There is a large mountain behind us, so the wind flies down and out to see. It obviously produces some strange conditions, but fun ones!
We use the Hooley handmade big wave surf leashes in these conditions. Not worth taking a risk on one of the coil jobs.

Those big boards sound like fun!
