Wind blows paddle boarder 109kmAUG 14, 2014 10:17PM

A WOMAN paddle boarder was blown 109km in a fierce wind, across busy shipping lanes in the English Channel and lost for 40 hours after losing her paddle and spectacles.Cl?mence Lapeyre was staying with relatives in a beach house at Morsalines, on the Cherbourg peninsula, in north-western France, when she decided to enjoy thesupermoon on an old paddle board."It was a beautiful night with a very beautiful moon and she apparently decided to go paddling by moonlight without letting us know," her uncle, Christophe R?my-N?rys, told BFM TV. "It was only late the next day that we realised she had disappeared."A westerly wind increased its intensity and shocked Lapeyre, 24, of Paris, knocking the paddle out of her hand and causing her to lose her spectacles. In rough seas - waves were four metres high and the winds up to 40 knots - she drifted across the Channel for 109km, struggling to stay on the board and to stay awake."I was scared, obviously," she told francetvinfo."The idea was always to keep a goal in mind. To advance., not to die."When R?my-N?rys realised she was missing, he alerted authorities. Boats and helicopters searched the waters near Morsalines but the weather grew worse. After a second night without any developments, R?my-N?rys and his family feared the worst.A missing person's report, with photograph, was issued before she was spotted clinging to her paddle board off the cliffs of Etretat, near the port of Le Havre, by a Belgium fishing boat 40 hours later. The fisherman brought her on to the boat and took her F?camp, the nearest port, where she was admitted to hospital suffering from dehydration, exhaustion and sunburn. She was able to contact her twin sister to tell her she was safe at the hospital."She fell off her board three times, and climbed back on again," R?my-N?rys said."She lost her glasses, and she lost her paddle. She did her best to stay awake, hanging on to her board, and not letting go."France's national maritime rescue service SNCM said it was a "miracle" that Lapeyre had been found alive.

Rules 1 and 2 of extreme weather survival (after telling people where you're going and all that).

1. Wear a good wetsuit. Dress for the worst conditions, not the best.
2. Make sure there's land downwind of where you're going that you will wash up on in the event of malfunction, gear loss or injury.
