How far do you have to paddle (get blown) till you get decent runners on the enclosed water runs, I've only ever seriously done open ocean down wind runs where your on runners straight away.

Towny.
Only a coulple hundred metres generally from a protected start spot for us on most of our moreton bay runs in brissy.
One northerly run i drop in off rocks at a point and you are getting bumps on ur first paddle stroke.
We need consistant 15knots of wind to generally make bumps worth going out for and thats light. 20 to 25 knots i believe is spot on. 30knots is rare and if its lined up dead straight for the angle of the run its unreal but then if its not lined up straight to me if feels like i get lost in the mess.
Havent had a 40 or 50 knot wind day yet.

Hey Andy I went up with Jacko and Steve a couple of years ago to Paddle from Dunwich to Cleveland in a 40 knot Easterly but they stopped running the ferries because it was too wild! Worth keeping in mind. Maybe 35 knots is the limit for that run...

If your put in and exit are safe then I don't really think there is a limit - the highest reading I've seen on one of our runs is 53knots and it was just epic. Dylan Frick lives 45km away in Stand and they can do one from Gordons Bay - there the wind comes off the mountain and goes 60+ - he says it's one standing wave for the first 4-5km.....but then he has to angle to get in which is near impossible even if it may have dropped to 30-40kn by then......

Our 50 knot downwinder took a turn for the worst with a 90 deg wind change mid run.
