i'm taking a guess, would that have been shaped at well known surf company at west burleigh and the bottom plane shape designed by a well known shaper of the above company known for those sorts of bottom plane shapes. look nice cheers

No.
no well known shapers.
A bit of help from some has been from WA.
But other wise it was 12 hrs of hand shaping.
Yes it was done at burleigh

I havn't seen that style of bottom-contour before - "double concave to bevel to rail ?"
Whats the theory behind it?

ive seen some shortboards by well known shaper as mentioned above with this. it kinda like a hull for lift. i also image it could help with that pesky problem of falling off at low paddling speeds.
cheers

Yeah well aside from any contentious debate about who may have come up with this idea first ...

Could someone who's ridden a board with this shape bottom / rail give me a description on the performance characteristics. Does it make driving bottom turns /reo's better or does it enhance control through the whitewater????

I'm guessing you would feel like you could get a little further out over your rail & it would be less likely to catch a rail or tip as someone mentioned previously.

How many degrees difference from a standard flat-bottom would it be, it looks like a pretty subtle difference?

All you need is come up with a catchy name for that bottom shape FIRST and 'Hey Presto' your the inventor.

Heres a bit of a run down of the history.
i had the chance to grab a cheap pu blank
Scotty Mac geed me up to go to 8'.
Steve del rosso from clear water surfboards let me use his bottom contours and bottom rocker from one of his 9' high performance long boards (he has an article in one of the latest mal mags).
I scaled and manipulated the outline down to 8' and based the outline of one of my shortboards (sparrow shapes - space duck model ) and changed the design to suit a sup.
It got cut on an aku shaping machine. and shaped at the base factory at burleigh.
After checking out laceys comment, it sort of clicked that it was reminecent of one of murray bourtons designs. For the love of god nobody mention it to muzz. He hates the things with a passion. he wont even let me leave one in our retail store.

The theory for the chimes and concaves was for helping nose riding and stability. And the deep spiral convave in the tail was to help it rail to rail (thinned the tail out a lot as well) im not a big fan of vee, i find it too tippy.
its all a bit of playing around and theory though. ill have to wait to get it in the water to see how it goes. spray and glassing next week. so hopefully it will be in the water queens birthday
ive got a freinds 9'6 on the go as well. a little bit different so ill put the photos up for debate as soon as its done.

You won't regret it Hilton. My 8'3" is the only board I ride now. Going to make a 8'8" pintail for bigger and more powerful waves. After about a dozen surfs, the 8'3" feels normal to me now. I still lose my balance and fall in every now and then but when I think back to my 9'4", I was doing that anyway. About the rail chines, I think Bob McTavish is a big fan and uses them on his mals to make the boards feel more narrow so it should work well. Is that a urathene blank?

Looking good,
Had to laugh at Muzza hates them. He made me a quad tow board a couple of years ago. I asked him them if he had shaped an SUP yet and he just borked at me.....

Hey have you tried sourcing EPS in QLD. I have been making my own blanks here in SA. Buy the foam in a big block, hotwire off then epoxy in a dyvinicell stringer. Pretty easy to do Hilton, you just need a source of EPS at about 25kg/m3.

Have you tried this place?

I can talk you through the rest. Pretty easy. I am looking for CNC myself.
