Those of you who have now got your copies of Australian Paddle Surfer issue #1 and have had a chance to read through it, I’d love to hear some feedback from you. This will help with product development and make issues #2 and beyond, even better.

It helps to know what you dig about this issue so we can continue to do those things. What did you like the best? Did any of it make you laugh? Did you think it was good quality? What would you like see continued in later issues? Please be specific and as detailed as possible.

Post your positive review points here (negative ones can go in the other thread):

A big congratulations Casso on your new mag. The mailman just delivered mine 10 mins ago (and I only ordered and paid for it 3 days ago) and although I haven't had time to read it cover to cover yet (but I will) I just wanted to say how I love:-

1. The size of the mag is perfect. (tiny bit smaller than A4). I was worried the mailman was going to have to bend it to get it in the mailbox but it nicely packaged in an envelope and the size means it doesn't have to be bent.
2. The quality and thickness of the paper is great
3. The matt finish of the cover is great...no grubby fingerprints.
4. Love the concept of all the "first" stories ie. first marathon, first light, first wave, first turn, first titles etc. Very clever.
5. Great range of stories from racing to surfing to tips to personal experiences. And all from a wide variety of contributors.
6. Professional photo's with excellent quality.
7. I like the way it's mostly Australian based and about Australian paddlers, surfers and their stories.
8. Very professionally producted !!
9. It's more like a small coffee table book that's you'll keep rather than a dunny floor magazine.

Well done Casso, Alison & all involved.

On the positive side I 2nd what the Wahine said.

Fantastic first up effort-should should be very proud.

Constructive criticism-too Sydney Centric-would be great to get a sense of what's going on elsewhere in OZ and perhaps Asia and NZ-I'm happy to be sent on any travel assignments....

Be good to see photos from all over OZ etc.-I'm sure you'll get heaps more content submissions now that the first issue is out-I would look towards Surfers Journal for an idea of the type of stories etc. to run.

Again, excellent work.

I agree with Sue a job well done!

The only problem I see is theres a lot of SUP events poping up around Aust ,and you may have to make the mag bigger!

Your'll proably need the back section of issue 2 on the Mambo alone!

Agree with all the above, couldn't put it any better. As I've said in the other thread, great to see the quality of the paper used etc when some more established mags are cutting costs by downgrading the stock they use.

Actually really enjoyed reading the article on Stuart's marathon up the Hawkesbury, more so than I thought I would (not that I didn't think I would enjoy it, but enjoyed it more than expected). It was a well written article, and having done 110 km mtn bike races I found myself really relating to alot of it.

A positive as well is the photos - guys ripping! A lot of the shots I've seen in other mags of SUPs they really aren't doing anything at all.

Casso

I was stoked with it. Great effort.

If you would like reports from local clubs or areas including photos, I would be happy to assist with the Sunshine Coast area. We could send it through to you and you could use or dump what you like.

Totally agree with Sue except being a male I may have to buy another copy for the dunny floor.

Again great effort.

I really like the photos as im a very visual person and the type of magazine reader who will pick it up and look closely at everyshot and i will do this about 3 times cover to cover before i read the storys and content. I must say i like the fact that the shots were of guys doing turns, snaps, moves etc i have only seen one other sup magazine and was a bit over the fact that the photos were mainly of guys just standing there and not doing much im sure they were ripping just the photos werent of that? So keep the mag coming and i will be happy!

Whoo hoo! I ordered my copy as soon as I received the e-mail notice that the magazine was available, and it just arrived. Not bad considering I’m all the way over here in Hawaii! And the price is certainly reasonable. Even with shipping it’s only a buck or two more than other mags off the news stand locally. Oh, and I ordered a couple of extra copies. A couple to read, share, and enjoy now, and the other copy goes in a ziplock bag and put in my safe deposit box, so 20 years from now I can pull it out and blow some minds with my MINT ISSUE #1. !!!
Wow. You guys did a fantastic job. Great “First” articles, and the text and photos are laid out well.
You couldn’t have chosen a better cover photo. Not only is it a great photo visually, but it also makes a very clear, bold statement that SUP Surfing has blasted onto the seen and is here to stay! (In a way somewhat reminiscent of “Bustin’ Down The Door”: “...create a sport, a culture, and an industry that...has captured the imagination of the world”.)
Congratulations, and I look forward to building my collection for years to come!

Got mine today, outstanding Casso - really really impressed. Even my (slightly SUP cynical) teenage kids were raving about the quality "feel" of the mag. Like the interviews and stories, makes it a more interesting read than just having photos.
Great job.

Hey Casso,

mine turned up today.

I laughed a knowing laugh at the Ist light no towel nudie up piece, done so many times.

I like the size over the normal mags just easier to handle and read.

The stock quality is great too.

The individually numbered copies was a superb idea a nice personal touch.

The articles were well researched and written with lots of tongue in cheek.

When is the next one out?

Phill

Great mag! Love the size and quality. Good mixture of stories. I agree with a bit more Aussie content, especially what's going on in QLD and WA. Hotshot's would be good!
Otherwise well done!

Thanks for all the positive feedback guys - it's really nice to hear. Maybe I will do a second issue after all.

Yeah pmorgan1974 was right, I was on 2DayFM this morning - talking to Kyle and Jackie O about the mag. I was right after Damien Leith and just before Shannon Noll! Free advertising - cool. Anybody else hear it?

My mag arrived this morning although I haven't read it cover to cover yet I have read some bits and had a flick through...really impressed great stuff. Also with what has been fedback so far there is scope there for many many more issues from all over I'm sure.

No one has mentioned it but I will, I like the advertisements showing the ranges of boards available especially living in NZ where choice is limited. Although I trawl through the web there's something about having glossy pics of boards in yer hands ( I hope that makes sense and doesn't sound perverse?).

I love that cover pic it looks like it's blasting out of the page and no I haven't had any 'shrooms'.

Now how many people grinned..even chuckled out loud to no one in particular when reading the bullet points on the last word? Pretty spot on huh?

Cheers

Also enjoyed issue 1 Casso, good effort mate,
wasn't concerned about the local stories, was all good to read about sup,
I guess the advertisers and event promoters will from now on be flying you all expenses paid around the country and beyond to cover their story in your mag so that will spread things around,
Cheers,
Camo.

Hey, Casso, finally read most of it. Well written, some great shots, and a good mix of surf, competition, race and recreation. I like the idea of a regular techniques sections and somewhat surprisingly, really enjoyed the race stories - as I am usually obsessing about the surf side of things.

Some good additions would be as mentioned already, some travelogue type surf stories, an 'around the states' news section and a design column perhaps - with a different designer each issue. I would have liked to have seen more questions for the Dogman and a few more shots as well - same for all interviews in future if possible.

More water shots and pics of big waves would be awesome as well but I realise this is dependant on the restraints of getting access to these types of shots/surf conditions.

yeah most of that especially the bit on board design. I think a piece much like Evan from standuppaddlesurf.net does on new releases would be good, I'm sure the big companies and smaller local ones would have a keen interest in that. I love seeing all these new boards and some pics of the board and someone such as yourself putting it through it's paces and a write up would be really interesting IMO. Much like a pictoral cybersup kinda thing too??
