I have a buddy who is buying his first board for use down on the surf coast (Anglesea) but he also wants to be able to cruise on the Yarra. He is currently tooling around on my Naish 11'6 and 12' Glide, but wants something different. The Naish 10' Mana has been recommended but it would be good to know of any other boards in that category that he could compare. Also, does anything in the Naish Hokua range have any flat water or downwind capability? Or are they strictly built for surf?

Thanks.

The Starboard 11'2" always gets mentioned as a great all round board.

Hi mate,

The Naish 11'6 was my first SUP and to be honest, I really didn't enjoy it enough to fall off the wagon after a month or two and start surfing again.....I rode it on flat water rivers and a couple of beach / reef set ups and it was OK in everything but not what I'd anticipated. (I'm 95kg / 182cm & 39yo as a guide).

I've since given it another try and got the 12' Glide for flat water which I just love and for some small wave riding I got the 10'5 Naish Mana which has been everything I thought and more just to gain confidence, learn the basics and swing into a few with ease. Considering it's size, it's really manouverable but once the basics are down, it's an instant trade to the next level which for me is now the 10' Naish Mana which I'll never let go off - the most versatile of boards.

Hope that helps just a little. Cheers, Chris.

Hey PT,
I thoroughly agree with Chris. I've found the Mana 10 foot to be one of the best. Can't get enough of it! Is awesome for surf and flat water as well.
I could rave on and on and on about it but I won't bore you!

Thanks Wizard.

I got my new 10' out for it's first river run this afternoon at Audley.

Beautiful afternoon, no one about and the 10' Mana was a dream to cruise on and just so stable, manouverable and feels 'alive'. Can't wait to hit some waves on it, I reckon she'll rip.

Here's some shot's;

Hi PTWoody,

If you want to try another board that is very similar to the 10' Mana, try the 9'11" Walden. It paddles really fast on the flat for such a short board & in my opinion it paddles a little straighter and a little faster than the Mana (athough the one 10' Mana that I paddled did have small 'surfing' fins in it). The Walden surfs really well with bevelled rails, concaves etc. Definitely equivalent to the 10' Mana in the surf.

I also like the full deck grip on the Walden which allows the odd run to the nose or somewhere to put the dog on the flatwater runs.

IMO Definitely worth a try before parting with your cash. Not many of them around but they are in the GSI range.

Another one that could be worth a try is the new 10'6" Hobie. At just under 28" wide they are really straight and fast on the flat but they have good volume and stability and the surfing is not much behind the two boards above.

Cheers
Mel

I have to say the Hobies did impress me at Mambo, I tried DJ's Mana and it was nimble off the tail even in small surf but I did find it pushed water due to rocker on paddle in but I am a big unit.

Standup swears by his 11.4 naish for everything and I would also throw in the PSH 11fter if they wanted stable for now and something more high performance down the track.

Worth having a look at the Coreban Cruiser (11'6) or maybe even the Rockett (10'6) depending on his weight and wether he wants more surf or flatwater capability.

hey ya'll,

I've been l been lucky enough to ride mana 10", naish 11.6, glide and Neol's latest member the 14foooter( the greatest bit of porn ever) Now the boys at Emery have made me a 10.4" ` 4 3/4, 31inch wide beautiful thang. Compared to the mana the emery is customed made in Australia by a bunch of guy from and surfed in Australian waters. Ther appares to be less float in the nose meaning it does'nt wiggle as much paddling out and other beifits. have a look

Tried the 10' Mana but decided on the 10' Fanatic. More stable and faster through the water.
