Hi there,

I am seeking advice on stand up boards.

I have been rider longboards 9 foot + for
many years now.A good mate just purchased
a 12 foot stand up which i've borrowed and
found it a breeze in flat water.Should i go down
to a 11.6 board to start with?

No...
Try the Starboard 11'2. If you have been riding longboards for many years then you will absolutely LOVE the Starboard 11'2.
The Naish 11'6 which DJ is refering to is too much like an aircraft carrier. Big chunky rails etc
The 11'2 has more of a surfboard shape rails and tail. Fun for smooth groovy turns and a walk to the nose. Its got plenty of soul.
Thats my advise

Ive riden both and for me being a 100% pure wave hunter I think the 11'2 is looser, smoother, flows well and surfs like a longboard on acid
Getting back on the tail of the 11'2 turns the board into a surfing machine.
Im under 70kg's which may have had an effect on my "kooky style" to turn the 11'6. Big rails, big tail

The Naish 11'4 goes heaps better than the 11'6 in the waves IMO.

Due to the thinner rails and it being a thruster.

Pretty sure DJ although he didn't mention a particular Length of board would be refering to the 11'4 Naish. which is a tolally different beast to the 11'6 Naish .

If you unsure on what board you want go to a SUP school, the're popping up all over the place and have a wide variety of boards. It would be much more worthwhile to pay little cash to try a board than pay big cash to buy a board that was recommended to you and you find it is a big tanker and no good. I find it very disturbing that people can rate a board in a sport that is relatively young and changes so rapidly.
From a retailer's point of view I see this all the time, people have rushed out to buy a pasha bulker that is good for the first couple of months to get their balance & coordination and then quickly outgrow it and want something smaller and more refined.

How much do you want for your ULI Oliver?

Thanks for bringing this up. I was planning on going to visit the stonker factory tomorrow morning to see the craftsmanship of their boards - got to say I'm pretty impressed.

All up I paid $1,500 for the C4 ULI. So I'm guessing I'd like to get a bit over $1000 for it now. I actually really love my ULI, but I'm also really enjoying surfing and want to get a hand crafted wooden stand up board and I can't justify having three boards. Will probably figure out what I want to do this week.

Your right Newcastle,

I have 30 years exp in longboarding and your coments are true.
But, me being raw to SUP, what do you think about 11.4 Naish
I am 105 kgs can surf well.i need something that well hold my
mass but once i get the hang of SUP in flat water i will hit the
waves.I have only been on a SUP twice and without big noteing
myself i dont want to be trading a board in ASAP.
I did have a go on a 9.6 naish today and it is way to small for me
so do you think the 11.4 will give me at least a year?

Cheers

oliver,
Grr, your right i just found out that the board just sold.

To make matters worse the seller sent me a message wed
asking if i wanted it, by the time i worked out how to view
the message the bloody thing was gone. Not to worry, some
lucky smarter bugger got a great deal!

Looks like its a newie for me,and the local store has only two
in stock until the new year!

I think you need to try the Naish 11'4 before you buy it. It is not as stable as other boards of this size and you need to make sure it works for your weight. Also the Naish has a lot of rocker and likes to be driven from the back half, which may not suit you if you are after a board with good glide and nose ridding ability. I am not saying the Naish is a bad board, but it won't suit everyone.

I was dreaming away and you posted while I was replying. If you want to try some other boards then my local shop has sold quite a few Starboard 11'2s to surfers who have been happy with them. If you know your a good surfer and want to push your limits a little bit then Hilly is the same weight as you and bought a Jimmy Lewis 10'8.

So you ride a starboard fish tail, looks like it has a bit of rocker.
I am seeking as much advice as i came so i don't blow a couple
of grand out the door.

So i take your advice. How would the Naish 11.4 go in flat water?

Cheers, gee it must be what 12.30am down your way!

It goes great on flat water...It's a bummer that 11'4" is sold..They're a great board.

BTW..I have both the 11'6" and 11'4" and I choose to use the 11'6" most days. (I paddle almost every day)

I still recommend the 11'6"..especially if you're over 100 kg.. (I'm about 90kg).

The new Naish AST is what I recommend.. Only because I love Naish...I have nothing against other brands.

The AST comes with grip and is a couple of hundred dollars cheaper than the normal 11'6".. www.naishsurfing.com/

IMO no matter how good a surfer you are or whatever experience you have I'd still go the bigger board as your first board.

Even Laird when asked what board he uses the most or likes the most he says his big old 12' Laird board like the one he did the English channel on.

If you want more surf-ability the 11'4" Naish..or 11'2" Starboard..even maybe the 10'10" Walden and 11' NSP might be your best choice..but you will sacrifice some stability in choppy water and it will be less fun just cruising around on flat water and doing down winders.

Make sure you get a board with a hand hole..Without a hand hole they're a bugger to carry..and think of your back.

If you got all those years behind you surfing you will pick up suping in no time the 11 4" would be perfect for you. How tall are you? when your saying the 9 6" is to small for you, i am also 105 kgs! Were you in flatwater or the surf when you had a go on the 9 6" & how long could you stand for without falling in?

Brooko,
I was in a seaway enterance when i had a go on the 9.6.
I just found it hard to balance in the swell was 2 foot max. I fell off to many
times,so i jumped back on my mates Ron House
12 foot log.
I found the 9.6 sluggish in flat water,So i am thinking the 11.4
may be the way to go in surf and flat water.

I may have been standing in the wrong place, the 9.6 tail was
underwater.

I am fine in the surf stance ,its the paddle stance(side ways) in waves that
i am finding a challange, but it will come in time!

Cheers

You sound like one mixed up guy 62mac You have to go with what your heart tells you with these sort of purchases - otherwise you miss out. Your posts about advice sound to me like a no brainer - you know what you want but you just can't get your brain to accept what your heart is telling you. In your opening post, I believe you already knew that the 11'6" was the board for you but you didn't want to accept it.

As a result of your indecisiveness you've missed an exceptional deal, which you will be unlikely to come across again anytime soon. You have also missed out on at least one week on the water, and are still none the wiser.

Trust me..... Life is very short, go out and pay the 2K for a bigger board that will put a smile on your dial next weekend. If in 6 months you're experienced enough and want something spunkier/smaller - all you have to do is sell it.
