I've just picked up a second hand PSH Hull paddler and I thought the valve looks a bit different. Can anyone advise if this looks normal for the brand. Hillsy

It's a GorTex vent plug.. I'd replace it with a normal non venting solid vent screw plug.. There's a plastic replacement plug that will fit.. I'm not sure if there's a metal version that will fit.. Try and find a socket that will fit and unscrew it.. It should have a bolt looking cover and they shouldn't be tampered with.. Looks like yours has because it's missing.

Where are you?

That looks a bit like a broken Gore-Tex plug (ie with the top bit broken off, which is very easy to do)

like this thing:

but TBH I don't recall if the old Hull Paddlers came with them fitted

(ah DJ...two minds with a single thought eh?)

What have you got against Goretex valves, DJ?

I broke the top off of one once and they're easily replaced...just need to make sure you have the right size socket fully over the plug..and take care not to over-torque it on the way in.

Nothing if they are working ok.. But when 99% of boards just have a normal vent plug/screw without a problem I wonder if the added complex of a Gortex plug is necessary.. I don't think they are.. Maybe on a super light all black carbon race board but on an old solid and heavy PSH hull paddler I wouldn't bother.
