I spent most of the last week up at Hamilton Island for the Annual 4 day Hamilton Island Outrigger Cup and this year I took my DC16 up to play. Here is a vid of my paddle around the island one day.

Wow, thats a long paddle! Must be close to 15kms I rekon.

I didn't watch the whole video but did you finish at the marina as well (full lap)? or from marina to catseye bay?

Good effort!

Great vid Sue.. Glad you slowed that paddling rate because I was getting tired just watching.

I just watched it with my sound off so I'll have to watch it again..

Nice technique.

I went Marina to Catseye so about 2km short of the entire island. The tides are massive up there going out about 200m with currents reaching up to 10 knots. I planned to leave 1.5 hours before high from the Marina to ensure I had current behind me for most of the way with it turning when I got to the other side to come home.

If I had of left Catseye I would have been in that major current from the start and might not have moved. Next year I'll go right round !!

Hey Piros..apparantly after the Organisers heard I'd paddle round the island, there was some discussion about it. I was lucky to have a perfect day and great conditions. The back wash coming off the rocks was still a little tricky from Southhead to the next point. I can't imagine doing it in conditions that you would well be aware of too that the event has most years. Where 40 ft long outriggers are launched half out of the water when powering through swell..imagine a little SUP board ??

Wazza & Piros & Trev & Brett & John Gillep & all the other Outrigger Paddlers out there...

I have spent hours today putting together another vid from this years Hamo. This one is the Open Mens 42km Race. I'm on board Mooloolaba's escort boat equipped with video and still cameras. What a race between Mooloolaba & Northcliffe !!

Both teams broke the previous race record by over 10 mins. You guys will love this vid. I'm just uploading it to Vimeo now. Says it will take another 7.5 hrs !! It's 27 mins long. So check back here much later for a link to that one.

Mooloolaba's team included Danny, Maynard, Lemo, Travis Grant, Big Toddy Cohen. Northcliffe had Dorries, Nick Crilly etc

And thanks Jonathon, Casso, DJ & others for your kind words about my vid...much appreciated. And yes..I'm on my DC16.

Your a Machine SUE!!!!!!!!!!
Maui to Molokai ..... around Hamilton IS .... what's next?

Is your DC16 have a rudder system? ...or you haven't bought it yet?

That would be a great race if it goes ahead next yr !

Awesome Well done!

Nice vid , you are one fit Lady!Noticed the accesory of course the paddle has to match the board colour. One question what size is your fin on the dc16 and how do you find the rudder system.I have the dc17 and i think the fin could be a bit bigger. But on the down side it probably wouldnt be as fun in really small surf , i havent had mine out in a true down wind situation but have caught some real fun 1 to 2 ft waves on it and rode them for ages , im guessing thats what a down wind run would feel like!

Sue, I have done a couple of 20km downwind ski races at Hamo. Both were epic. We loaded all the skis onto a barge and ploughed upwind for about an hour and a half. I think we might have ended up in the lee of Lindeman Island (?). I would not consider travelling to Hamo to race around the island - too much of a slog. But a downwinder would be awesome. If it is organised, I'll be on it.

Boylos...yes my DC16 has a rudder system as per whatever Dale sends them out with. And thanks for your words of encouragement !!

TeaTree...Of course my paddle matches my board !! I'm a girl !! The whole package is referred to as "Rexona Blue" because I wanted them both to look like the Rexona deoderant can !! The fin on my board is I guess Dales stock standard fin ?? I just measured it and it's 20cm long. Hope that helps you. I LOVE my rudder! I don't even think about it now. It just comes automatically I surpose like driving a manual car. You no longer think about changing the gears after awhile. I find having a rudder allows you to paddle in all kinds of adverse conditions. Whether it be wind, tide, side swell etc. It allows you to paddle evenly on both sides.

DaveK...I think I remember the race you're talking about where ski's were dropped way out past Pentecost to paddle one way home. Quite a huge thing to organise. Would be fun though.

Just out packing the truck for the annual Fraser Island trip in the morning. Trying to decide whether to take the DC16 or even the C4 10'. Last year a bunch of us SUP surfed and did an 8km downwind to Eli creek only to hear later from a light aircraft pilot that 3 huge sharks followed us the whole way !! This year the others aren't coming so I may leave my board at home and go fishing and worming instead !! Cheers

Great job Sue , what brand of canoes are they using now ? those ama's look very fast. Nice wash ride on the support boat wake about 3/4 way through. Good to see some Goldie crew in the boat and Danny still going hard , for about 30 secs I started to miss it then I remembered the 4.30am training starts in winter got over it pretty quick.Nice conditions no wonder they went so fast.

I would race a Sup around the Island though , why don't plant the seed?

Sue - yes it was Pentecost Island. It is Epic paddling down the Whitsunday Passage. The runners just jack up real steap. Would be awesome on a SUP. If anyone wants to organise a barge, speak to Dean Gardiner who organised the 2 races I did. Didn't seem to be that much of a hassle at the time.

The first two crews to finish were in Southern Spirits. There are only about 10 in Australia. Mooloolaba took possession of there's only about 2 weeks before the race. Some Sydney crews have them, Tweed Heads and Coffs Harbour. And yes the ama is fast. It's looks like a catamaran.

And there was no wash riding on the support boats wash cause that was the boat I was on running their changes..the boys did cop a bit from the Lead Boat at one point which was about 400 metres away. You see it in some of the pics to Penecost.

hi, i got a couple of questions. i've got a paddle that is 6" above my head, good for my small surfing sups. i've been doing a few ocean paddles on my dw and it felt fine. in flat water, my paddle felt short, maybe because my dw has me a bit higher out of the water. anyway, i got another paddle 2' longer today. i went for paddle from the alley to tally and back and the new paddle felt a bit long when chasing a few runners. i'm thinking of keeping the longer paddle for still water and calm ocean and using the shorter paddle for rougher conditions and chasing runners. any thoughts would be welcomed
cheers

Hey Lacey...that paddle I used in the Hamilton vid is 5" over my head. I originally started off with 9" over for overall paddling everything, then got a 7" over head for surfing (which I'm learning). Then I got a 7" over head C4 XPR distance blade for racing when I started really getting into it and now only 3 months ago I asked Woogie for one of his newer Kia Kaha's which are really light weight for the Maui to Molokai.

It is 5" over my head and I find it great for maintaining a higher rating which is needed to chase runs in open ocean. Six months ago when I first started distance my hubby Danny commented during a downwind together one day that my rating was too slow and that he thought my blade was too long. (He is an outrigger coach with years of experience so I listened). That blade was 7" over head.

I find the 5" over perfect in swell and when I've gone back to using a longer blade like 7" over head I find I "crab" the return of the stroke. ie. I catch the water on the recovery part of the stroke. So overall I'm pretty happy with the blade I finally ended up with. Don't use the other 3 at all anymore !!

But as we've all heard before on here this is my opinion only and everyone may have different opinions and experiences and preferances. You just gotta find what's right for you. Hope this helps.

thxs for that, umm rating was the word i was looking for. in my humble way, the rating was slower and it did feel a bit clumsy.on the good side i did manage to get up thirty strokes a side. i'll try it in the flats, but its looking like a mistake getting the longer paddle. once again thanks for your opinion
