Awesome vid, and awesome conditions. You've outdone yourself again DJ. You caught some crackers there, and it was interesting to see what the Maliko does when the nose catches a little. That board is going to prove a great camera sled for you.

Another couple of great videos! I loved the way that you timed the Santana music to pick up the beat right as you hit the wind line; great editing.
I noticed in the first vid that there was a guy in your group on a 14' Blue Planet Bumprider. Do you know whether that was the 28" or 30" model? Do you have any input on either of those boards?

The 28 is a different design to the other All Stars. It has remained the same as the 2016 board whereas all the others are a new shape with a pointier piercing nose and more volume up front.. The 28 is meant as a big boy downwind board but not really a race board. It's one of those situations that Area 10 was talking about recently when he said volume is not necessarily a relevant guide for rider weight and stability. The 28 is more stable than the 27 even though it is "only" 309 litres compared with 322. The volume of the 27 is in the nose to help it pop up, whereas the 28 has more rocker and doesn't need the pop up volume. Of course, that restricted waterline makes the 28 slower in flat water which is why I say it is not a genuine speedy race board in all conditions. The 28 also has a narrower tail than the 27.

Just to highlight the point about volume not being a good indicator of stability, the 28 is actually the exact same volume as the 24.5, yet Starboard recommends rider weights of 80-115kg for the 28 but only 60-85kg for the 24.5. So clearly and predictably, the 24.5 is a considerably tippier board than the 28 despite the volume being the same.

You should get one of these and wear it backwards next time you do a downwinder.

Well here we go, my first post although i am a long time viewer of the site!! DJ, This question may have been posed before, what are you using to mount your camera and how are you fixing it to the board?The quality of the videos is really high. They are great.

Thanks.. and a lot of my older vids show what my home made camera mount looks like with its pvc pipes and lots of duct tape.. and just using old GoPro2 camera's..

Gday PTWoody can I ask you if the Allstar nose steered please also prepared to DJ's board the Allstar seemed to want to ride over the wave and not bury the nose of course more nose volume but did you find any trouble with side swell and side wind with the more boulbus nose cheers Ksorry for all the Questions but I got to ride the sic fx and taken that out of the equation, did have my heart set on the Allstar but was so impressed with DJ's footage I am seriously considering buying my first Naish cheers again

Hey Krist, the 2017 All Star has a combination of more volume in the nose but also a sharper nose profile so even if you do hit the wave in front, it tends to pierce and then rise up very quickly to skirt over the wave - a combination of planing and displacing that really works. It's a terrific improvement. On this day, we had a slightly offshore wind direction and to be perfectly honest, it effected me more than DJ. I will admit though, my backhand skills are nowhere near as refined as DJ's so I can't say whether that shows the Starboard is worse off in side wind and side swell than the Naish or whether it was my own deficiencies.
