SandS,
The hi-vis tops are something that we are trying to get everyone to wear on DW's in Melbourne.
We had a friendly power-boater (also kiter / windsurfer) motor over to us off StKilda one day last year. He pointed out that of the group of 6-7 of us out that day, he could only see the 2 of us in hi-vis tops.
As he pointed out, when you're speeding along in a power boat, you're not going to see a person standing on a board against a backdrop of wind, whitecaps and dark coloured water unless the paddler has a hi-vis top on. In particular the orange or red colours stand out best.
Just another basic and easy safety facet that every DW paddler should be conscious of and adhering to.
