I went down around 9.30am seen a couple heading in , not sure if they managed to get out though. Its was tough going but managed to score two waves in about 2 hours , what a blast though it was worth the wait , i was going so fast it was a mission to just stay on the board and when i did come of it was like hitting a brick wall , only a bit softer! If the wind hadn,t been blowin 25 it would have been awesome not many surfers out either.I would have scored a few more big ones if those tow in blokes didnt take all the choice ones. One thing for sure its tempting to take the wave all the way to the inside sections ,but you pay the price!when its that big.

Jake you probably noticed I disappeared , I caught one of the big close out sets and when I pulled off I dived over the lip but my board got sucked over my leg roped stretched about 30 feet and snapped with the loudest crack at the ankle strap, my board still pulled through the wave so swam to it leaving my paddle but before I got to it the sets slammed me , a mal rider grabbed my paddle but he had to paddle away from me to get out past the sets , I tried to swim back out but the sets just drove my head into the sand , I got a class "A" royal flogging so I turned and swam to my board which washed up 500m away , the mal rider ditched my paddle so I had no board or paddle for the long swim in getting pounded the whole way , when I finally made it to the beach I told the life guards to look out for my paddle , it eventually washed up at Palm Beach ,and they radioed the life guards at Currumbin who I also told to look out for it and the Palm Beach life guard drove it back up to Currumbin for me and had to swim across the creek to get it.

I'm so lucky to get my paddle back good lesson learnt. "Never leave your paddle".The recoil from the leg rope was so severe it smashed a hole in the tail of my board.

Yeah I got some bombers before that so did my mates , Jake and Marty .I also broke 3 of the 4 fin boxes in my board, I'm pretty sure that was just from the surfing as I just had all my boxes replaced with future boxes and they all broke the same way so maybe the repair was a bit sus , so the ole 9-10 is in pretty bad shape, tomorrow should be pumping but the wind will be up and it will be a struggle on my 9-1 so it could be a rest day for me and just watch the Malfunction finals.

Sounds like you had a good workout Piros . Still trying to get my head around the fact that a 9 foot board is undergunned LoL

Quick question: What sort of legrope was it? ie new or old legrope or special SUP leggie. Do you think snapping could have been prevented somehow or the waves were just that heavy?

Lobes.. Just a thought.

I've heard that a lot of leach breaks happen about 10" from the board meaning that maybe the leggie was wrapped around the fin and got cut by the fin.

So no matter what type.. or brand of the leggie the trailing edge of a fin is pretty sharp and will cut any leggie.

It also helps to go with the board rather than fight against it's pull.. but that's hard to do sometime when you're being dumped.

It will be interesting to hear where Piros broke.

I now have snapped 6 leg ropes all have broken at the ankle strap , this one was slightly different it broke just outside the swivel mount all the others broke where the pin goes through on the swivel on the ankle strap , it was a 9 foot mal big wave leg rope (extra thick) and was only a month old , when I was loading what was left of my 9-10 into my car(an hour later) people were coming up saying how they heard the crack when it broke and it went off like a gun shot, I forgot to mention my right leg is now 3 inches longer than left the pressure was unreal , when I launch off the lip I was about 10 ft in the air and landed like a bag of sh!t loosing my paddle mid flight , I was on one side of this huge wave and my board got sucked down the face.If the the leg rope didn't break the plug probably would have ripped out.

But it was still a great session and the day before we got the biggest waves I've ever surfed in years at Currumbin and we were on sups. Guys were towing in around us.

Lobes the problem with the 9-1 was paddling on to the wave, the wind was blowing us back off the waves.I reckon the new PSH 11-0 gun would have been unreal out there.

Sounds like it was well designed. Breaking off anywhere but the mount would mean the rubber would get you on the recoil. If it punched a hole in the tail of your board then it would mess you up pretty bad!

Looking back I'm glad it broke where it did the swim back was hard enough without whiplash scars all over me.

Spewing i have to work missing the best swell event for ages , although its probably been a bit to big for sup as far as getting out anyway. The tow in guys where giving me the ****s last Sunday at the Alley.I was waiting right out the back for the bommies to come through and every time one came a Jet ski recked it.Their where a couple of guys out just free surfing and they where where pretty pissed too.As far as im concerned towin in those conditions isn,t neccessary the sets where coming in a long time apart and a short boarder or Mal rider would have no trouble paddling out. They show no repect for anyone else in the water and by the way they where carrying on you would think they where towing in 30ft waves not 6ft.

yo tea tree

the paddler has the right of way even if a tow guy is on a wave first

so the rave goes

funny thou

a guy at ti tree noosa called me off a wave even after i was on it for 50m or so and while i had to go wide around a few crew paddlin out and do a big extended cutback he started paddling and yelled "oy" very agressively so i backed out to miss him and cracked up laughing as he went over the falls and got totally hammered

i rode the rest of the wave crying with laughter and i paddled back out and said still laughing "hay dude i didnt know you were going left"

he didnt say much

Andrew I'm set up for towing as well but for this swell I've decided to hit it on my Sup , I know alot of the tow Goldie tow crew and the majority back right off from the paddle in surfers , it's just a few kooks that f**k it especially the guys that jump off the skies. They drop the rider off and then ski through the pack.

Some of these sock cocks where coming in on reforms when it's this big you don't need to hit the points , it's breaking everywhere .The rule of thumb is tow a sled a tow a surfer with a jacket and the cops won't book you and don't tow within 60m of surfers obviously this isn't happening.

Don't feel shy and tell these guys to f**k off if there too close the cops sit on the beach at Currumbin and wait for them to come into book them. If they don't leave get there number off the ski and doub them in.The cops will gladly pay a visit.

I'd love to see jet ski's banned from local beaches. It's great they've been banned from Western Port Bay.

I can honestly say I've never seen anyone on a jet ski who considers anyone but themselves; apart from cops and rescue guys, I've only ever seen inconsiderate dicks tearing up and down beaches on them - that's why CUBs buy them isn't it?

Two of the tow crews out at the Alley last weekend weren't too bad. When the windsurfers were getting parted from their gear they would offer a tow back to it. I guess there was some amount of respect there. But in saying that there were just as many, if not more wankers out there too.

Oliver, they will never get banned from the Alley, it's a bar crossing that boats use all the time and pretty much a free for all with every surf craft imaginable.
