I want to motor out to quarrantine on my 10'6, then dump the motor on the beach and surf on either the paddleboard if its small and ****, or my surfboard if its on.

I'm thinking one of those electric motors that you see on fishing boats. Anyone tried anything like this?

We've been planning a paddle from Portsea Pier around to Quarrantine..It shouldn't take us long.....You should join us.

Do you know what tide it works on?...Have you been there before?

I remember seeing a pic in the newspaper once of a guy at Quarrantine getting a huge stand up barrel...It said the wave was in Port Phillip Bay..

The Tide is so strong that it moves at over 10Knots. I wouldn't advise any paddling activities anywhere near the rip. I also reakon it would be a couple of hours paddle each way (If you paddled out on the outgoing - turned around and paddled in on the incoming) There would be no time to surf... . If you got the tides wrong or took too long you would be off to tassie in the rip - or have to wait it out on the beach for 6 hours till the next change....

Basically it would totally suck... The rip hits hard right to the edge of the shore too...I wouldn't do it without powered help...

If the tide is coming in the only place you'll end up is somewhere inside the bay. I've paddled numerous times in very strong tidal currents around inverloch, as long as you don't paddle against it you are fine - wind is a bigger problem imo. If the conditions are right I wouldn't see it as too much of a challenge.

I really would love to paddle around Portsea and the quarrantine. Always facinated me as a kid cause you weren't allowed to go there.

Oliver I'm keen to suss it out with you..but I think sillsymark might be right about the strong current..I think the speed and strength would be much much more through the heads than what you have ever experienced at Inverloch...But still..I'm game..

Only one way to find out - let's check out the area - be fun to paddle around Portsea - Should be good on a light south / South Easterly. It's only about 2km crossing from Point Nepean to Point Londsdale and if the tides coming in the worst place we could end up in is Queenscliffe which isn't a bad place to visit - beautiful town and hotel there and a ferry service back to Portsea/Sorrento at $9.00 - it sounds perfect. I'm sure JD will bring along the flares if we get into any trouble.

Thinking a little more about it. West coast guys - JD Revin et all could catch the ferry from Queenscliffe to Sorrento and meet us there and paddle back or vice versa.... something to think more about - but totally doable imho.

Me too! Pick me! I wanna come!

I'll ask Ryan about it too - he has paddled a sea kayak across, with his surfboard strapped on the back. They surfed at quarantine (I think...on the Portsea side anyway), and then paddled back. I remember him saying it was very dodgy with the timing of the tides.

I'll bring the flares, and a sea-anchor, and radio, and life-raft, and an esky full of beer. Oliver or DJ, you can carry it all on your board!

Go guys!!! Plenty of balls...You guys will do it O.K if you pick the Ebb. And the light S or SE...Bang on there DJ.

If you do get pushed in with the tide and you need to wait it out there's always Mud Island to head to...I don't think you'll get a chance to get to Queenscliff once the rip gets cranking , Mud Island is right in the middle of the crossing and the ferry passes it on the Portsea side heading out. Nice spot for those who havn't visited, I got stuck there for a few hours once when the wind died on my Kiteboard while a mate went to get a jet Ski. Was starting to wonder what raw bird would taste like....
