Well it's finally started to happen Aussie boys shaping for the big guns. Newcastle Sup Simon is having custom C4's made in Aus and now Dale Chapman is doing customs for Ron House through the Greenline Sup shop on the Gold Coast.

If you can't find the right board in the shop and you want one slightly longer and wider , Macca will fire off an email to Ron House with your request and Ron will reconfigure the shape and email it back direct to Dale Chapman’s computer driven CNC machine...How good is that

The model will be know as the "San Clemente" that’s where Ron lives and I think this is win for all concerned , the local shop , shaper ,designer & punter. No more long waits for stock , container damaged boards and faulty products and you will still get a tried and tested design.

I don't think it will be long before PSH and the other big names follow suit, which will be a great way to keep our hard earned bucks here in AUS and see a new breed of Sup trusted designs tailored to suit our Aussie conditions.

That's fantastic Piros, smart use of technology, export a file, not a board.

Just feel a little bit of aussie cultural cringe though. Aren't there any local shapers who actually have experience with the breaks where the custom shape will be used who could feed the shape to Dale.

I guess it's all about experience with the technology at this stage and that will undoubtedly come with time.

On the Stand Up Zone forum there has been a lot of discussion about the custom downwind boards from SIC and Bill Foote.

I can see a time when you could contract Footemaui or SIC or Bark to design a board for you and have it made locally instead of freighting the thing. I guess one of the issues would be ownership of design, little bit scary to upload your latest shape to a competitor. Or even better - a DC or a Penetrator made in Maui or Brittany. Imagine the cost and environmental savings when you think of transport, packing customs etc etc.

Still think knowledge of local conditions is a huge factor though.

Johnathan this is more to fill gaps in Rons range , most of his boards are high performance so if you are a beefier type you have to up in length , he doesn't have the "Wides" range like PSH.

You can still just go to Dale and buy a DC direct but alot of punters don't exactly know what they want or need on a custom and people like try before they buy , how many times have you jumped on a demo and said I love this board but I wish it was jus a bit wider or longer,so that makes it easy to order a board , either way Dale still makes the board which I think is great.

Great idea. I'd love to get one of Bill Foote's downwind boards here on the US east coast. Shipping is a killer though. It would be great to have the CNC file make Bill some $, and some to the local shaper glasser who finishes the board. There has to be a level of trust though. The thread on the zone concerning ripped off designs shows that sharing CNC files will be tricky.

Glad to hear the good news! A while back, in an email to a really well known SUP manufacturer, I made the suggestion that their orders could be filled by local shapers who had been approved by their company. Finding out that it is beginning to happen is refreshing, as it is my belief that the market must return home...

I met Bill Foote paddling at Lahaina last month. We have a mutual friend in Yallingup. His customs look uber cool. When I told him I had just got a PSH 9'6 he told me he felt sorry for me! (jokingly natch).
He exports boards to Japan also right now and is talking to somebody down here as the sport evolves locally.
I guess copyright is the big issue again.

Ive ordered a board from Rod Hocker, met with him in person saw a couple of his boards and put the deposit down. I use to work with surftech and then did some work in China with another company. I was very happy with what i heard from Rod and what I saw. I was able to order exactly to my weight and ability something I wasnt going to be able to do otherwise.I'm only about 75kgs. Will let the site no more when i'm lucky enough to get it in my hands and in the water.
So it is very possible to get great product locally

Ron and Dale meet at the Malfunction in March through Dave McCarthy of Greenline and Ron visited Dales factory , obviously he liked what he saw. I would assume they have come to a professional agreement re copyright but knowing Dale that would'nt be an issue anyway.

My 9-1 at 27.5 is hard work and at 88kg my legs are really working . I'm considering getting a scaled down version of my 9-10 to around 9-4 .So I might be on the cards for a "San Clemente" just have to save a few more bottle tops.
