This thread is dedicated to discussion of such a thing.
www.avondescent.com.au/

Has anyone done it before on a SUP, or got info from doing it before?
Would ya use an inflatable or custom shape a full kevlar stick? with flip up spring loaded fin/s?
what size board would ya use?

Is this idea completely ridiculous?
how would you take the rapids? on the knees or lying down skeleton style?
134km over 2 days doesn't sound too bad.
Maybe a SUP Team challenge entry (share the ride with 4 ppl) sounds like a better idea?

Your crazy!!!
Having been part of support crews for paddlers over the years there is no way you would get me out there on a sup. Its bloody freezing. The last 30 km is mainly into a stiff southerly on flatwater with virtually no current assistance. If the river is up trying to negotiate the teatrees and some of the rapids would be too exhausting after continually getting dunked in the freezing river. As a team maybe but who would want to do the last stretch.

You would have to be sponsored, the board, paddle and personal carnage would be epic.

There you go Rob your next feature!

I think it's nearly impossible, depending on the river level you'd never make it down some of the weir sections and through the tea tree's. And if you did the flat water paddle to the finish is almost always upwind and that would be the clincher.

Thanks for posting that video - unreal. It looks like a lot of fun if a tad dangerous at times.....the rocks being the main thing that would scare me.

bertie thats a great idea, we used to do Walyunga rapids on surfboards and try standing up (full gath helmet and wettie) years ago.

I've been thinking about it myself, you'd want really high water and a bendy flexible fin otherwise the rocks will rip it off. The height of the tea trees is an issue if standing up (decapitation).

Doing Bells would be awesome! One year we organised a surfboat to do it but we only got as far as the first weir more of a publicity stunt than anything else.....

I have done the Avon Descent the last 3 years in a row. I am also a keen SUP surfer and downwinder. My opinion is that it is not worth doing the Descent on a SUP. The tea trees are a huge issue hard enough in a kayak. Rocks also would be very dangerous falling from a standing position toward a myriad of rocks above and below the surface would mean wearing a lot of protective gear. Also you would not be able to wear a leggie as it it also dangerous and would be snagged very quickly and as already mentioned the last 20 odd kms is upwind. It may be possible but would just not be much fun you would trash your gear and it would take a really long time (possibility of being timed out).
However, down river SUPing is obviously possible and there are other races that may be suitable. One that comes to mind is the Northam to Toodyay race which is a lead up race to the Descent. Wind direction is obviously always a factor and also water levels. I like to kayak rivers and may try and SUP some sections but will pick the sections and the conditions so its fun.
