Today Dave and I did a 30-40 knot down-winder with him on the 14' Joe Bark down-wind race board and me on my little 12' Naish Glide.

Which board do you guys think was fastest?... (I've gotta go to work right now but I'll be back later with the answer).. Here's a few pics.

I think Naish in a choppy swell, Bark on the dead-flat.

I'd say the stronger paddler too. Tell you what though...Bark boards are everywhere over here in Hawaii. Especially paddleboards. Heard Bark is bringing out a new 14 & 16ft SUB with steering systems next month. Surposed to be better than the F16 ??

Well on my first paddle on the Bark it was glassy flat and it went fast, remembering I haven't had much time on anything other than 11'6 big boards. But I took about 1 minute off a previous 8 minute time trial course I use.

Second paddle was today in choppy wind swell with 25-30knts tail wind. It caught the small sneaky chop in between the larger ones very well and took off smoothly. The bigger ones will need some more practice. I buried the nose several times which slowed me quickly. DJ on his glide and me on the Bark had very similar speed over the 1hour 20. I look forward to more runs on it.

Joe Bark will have a shape with Surftech out in March Called the expedition 14FT

Stuey, We would love to take a penetrator for a spin down here. Did I see one cruising along between the moorings in Sorrento 2 weeks ago?

You may have Dave, the first 18'8" that I made was for a guy in Melbourne. It's black carbon rails with a silver deck and is the one Woogie test ran in an early video a while back.......

My son will be competing in the WQS event in Tassie in March and I may drive down and paddle Bass Strait No but if I come down I will look at bringing a Penetrator to leave with my mate Brian from Bicheno, if so will definetely look up Daves 1 & 2 for a paddle........

Yeah I have to work.. Wot a bugger.. But some how I've gotta make the money to pay for my Naish boards and Kialoa paddles..

Sorry to keep you guys in suspenders about which board was faster but the result was a surprise to us both because the 14' Bark looks so fast and racey.. But like Dave said at the end of almost one and a half hours there was nothing in it.. we crossed the finish almost side by side.

I would have bet fifty bucks that the Bark would win on a day like this.

This is only the first of more down-winders and it may take a few more to know for sure which is the faster board.

The two boards are very different to paddle..The Glide suddenly gets on the plane and takes off like a rocket..almost like someone pulling the rug out from underneath you.

The Bark doesn't do that.. It seems to slowly get on the plane and then cruises along almost effortlessly.

Both boards had nose dive issues and the Bark seemed the worst.. It would bog down and take ages to resurface.. The Glide seemed to recover quicker but you had to be careful on the Glide to keep it going straight because the rails would catch and sort of turn and high-side you.

I found the Bark the tail would want to come around sometimes and I wonder if the fin was further forward it would help stop that..even though you would think it would make it worse.

I found the Bark a little more tippy but when it tips it's a bit like the Pene were it slows so you can recover due to the long rail length (I think) .. The Bark seems to be about 4" thick and the Glide is about 6" thick.. This made the Glide a bit more stable (IMO ) but also raises you center of gravity and makes the board feel a little corky.

It will be interesting to see how they both compare on flat glassy water.

I hope to have a waterproof camera soon so I'll try and get some action shot of these boards planing and catching runners.

Yeah Stuey.. I also reckon your new 14' Pene would whip the arses of both these boards.. I'd love to try on one in good down-wind conditions one day.

We had some serous wind behind us today with some gusts over 40 knots and the rough conditions caused me to fall many times and I even saw Dave fall a couple of times.. I should have taken a picture because that's a rare sight (Dave falling)...

No problems with the cops..... yet ....(fingers crossed)..

But even with my 12' Glide on my little zook there's not that much overhang.

I didn't look that close to compare rockers but looking at them on the roof of my car they looked very similar.

I'm still not sure about the displacement hull thing.

It gets pretty rough out there in strong winds and I'm not sure I'd be wanting to stand on something with a round'ish bottom.

Ye of little faith DJ. Apart from some issues with my steering system (they're having a little trouble getting used to it) the Hawaiians are absolutely frothing on the Penetrator, they're blown away by how FAST and STABLE it actually is.

There's quite a few people out there who should spare a little thought as to who they're supporting as they go for their Australia Day paddle......

This board is for sale now.
Jo, a fellow firefighter had it shaped by Joe Bark in 2008 after racing the Catalina race. Unfortunatly it is too big for her frame so she is wanting to buy a PSH surf SUP
The board is 14ft long, 29" wide and weighs about 14 kgs.
It will be listed in the classifieds later today but she wants around $3000 for this lovely craft.
Jo's # is 0418 582 420

Guy's you will probably find out in the next few weeks!

My 16' PENE is on its way right now to VICO and I have a feeling it will pop its head up in a race in the next few weeks.

Andrew.A

I shed a tear as I was wrapping it up, but unfortunately something had to go from the garage - it was the PENE or one of the kids. I did think about it for just a moment.....
