Ok as a longboarder who dibbles in sup surfing from time to time.
I'm asking advice from you guys who receive the stink eye from
prone guys.

This guy or blow'in has just arrived at my local,no big deal that happens.
The problem is,he has in the past few weeks become the king of drop in.
He never looks to the left ( right hand ) point break and a very congested
one at that and drops in on everyone.
Without speaking to him he appears to be a nice guy around the 50+ range.
I would not call him a gun but goes ok'ish at best.

I've done the stink, done the shake of the head.

So how should I approach this in the future

Get your stand up out , and proceeed to drop in on him any chance you get.If it gets aggro at least you have the paddle to whack him on the melon with.

hmm can see this thread as a 4 pager :)

mate treat him as any other new surfer in the water ? key his car...that was a joke

we have all made mistakes, i know i have, but if he is pissing others off alot maybe give him a hand...

what side is he paddling "most" on to catch the wave? if he can only paddle on his left for a wave that may effect his vision ...

or he could just be a dick

i found the answer on wikepedia

i googled the alley currumbin

this is your problem :)

Party Wave

Arguably the quickest method in causing personal or others harm. A 'Party Wave' is a wave that every surfer must catch. If a surfer shouts 'Party Wave', Every surfer in earshot of the original surfer that shouted party wave, must catch the same wave as everyone else for as long as possible, disregarding the dominant 'dropping in' rule. Anyone that hears the term shouted must catch the wave as they are obliged to the 'Party Wave' contract. 'Mario' is one surfer that is very keen on party waves and can be seen during the early hours of the morning enforcing the rule. 'The King' is not very fond of the concept and is the single humanoid that can overrule the 'Party Wave' notion.

mac, has anybody spoken to him about it? if he has been spoken to about whats the right thing to do and hasn't changed his ways i think this might work.

you 'll need all your mates, better get some ringins too cause that won't be enough, do mass drop ins for about say 5 of his waves- hunt as pack, clear a path inside for him, force him to take waves where you can drop in

after 5 leave him be, if he continues, repeat dosage.
he may ask whats going on- well tell him

cheers

btw this is a rare post from you, must be a biggie

Ok, here's my take on this.
If I was in your shoes I would approach him in a friendly manner and say "look I'm a carefree easy going sort of bloke who use to hassle for waves when I was younger but I'm too old for that **** now". "I just enjoy gettin out there and cruisin". "Personally, I don't mind if you drop in on me occasionally BUT there are a few locals that might get pissed off and may have a more agro approach". "is dropping in sweet where you are from ?". On the off chance he does'nt know that dropping in is not the go (then the bloke is from Mars) just explain it to him.
Then make up some story about a blowin getting his car torched cause he dropped in one time.
If this all fails just headbutt him.

Yes it can get all funky in here posting a longboarders take on things but I respect what you guys do always have.
He is new to the area, just bought a unit across the road so I'll be seeing him often.
I don't want to upset him and would like to welcome him BUT he is pissing me and a few of my mates off.

Smash him good and proper, but hey we all know each other and get along well.
To answer your question seriously,I'd have a word and if that didn't work
I'd go to the car rip out my oldest board and whack a floater on his melon[}:)]

I once takled the same problem. What I did is video the person in question and gave them a copy. Said I got some great shots of them and gently said that they did drop in a few times. Seemed to work.

If he was at my local he would get bashed. Simple as that.
I don't agree with the philosophy as I'm a am 40 now.
But 20 years ago it was a different story. He would learn his lesson and never drop in again.
Simple as that.

As someone who rides a shortboard predominantly and only rides a sup in flatwater or bays when its flat I have zero sympathy for the ultra greedy longboarders who frequent the Bluff at Alex when a sup rider turns up and proceeds to turn the tables.
Truth is most longboarders really have no idea how greedy they are because they simply ignore anyone riding shorter boards (or other longboarders for that matter) and so make pigs of themselves.
Most of them are incapable of turning their heads to the left and are also deaf in the left ear.
Karma for them.
Need to look at yourself and answer the question about your own wave count.
Have a chat to the guy and chances are once you know each other he won't be dropping in on you (as much).
As for the rest of the line up that's another conundrum.
One thing I notice when trying to ride a wave behind a longboarder who's dropped in on me (riding a shortboard) is it can be more difficult due to the longboard's wake and also the different lines drawn by the longboarder and shortboarder.
When riding a longboard and someone drops in the wake is no problem for me and as long as they don't cut back into me I'm always happy to share a wave.
Wouldn't the wake of a sup be no problem for most on a longboard behind the sup rider?
The ocean belongs to no one irrespective of any piece of dirt one has purchased no matter how close to the water.
I feel strongly about this topic because its one of the reason I started to ride sups.
To get out on the water and enjoy some peaceful paddling in an aquatic environment without having to put up with the greed of others that I encounter out in the surf.
It's gotten so bad there's many times lately that I want to give away an activity that's shaped my life, taken me to far flung corners of the globe and given immeasurable amounts of joy mixed in with fear, frustration and peace.

Introduce him to the table of knowledge, once he is feeling at home I'm sure they will set him straight. Get the captain to have a word with him even though he is probably worse than anyone at dropping in.

You could at least say something to him,you never know he might be blind in that eye. I've never dropped in deliberatly but do it sometimes by accident and get attitude from people who don't know me but if they TALK to me they are usually cool about it.

Sounds like the old 'you have to drop in to get waves on the Goldy' myth. This is of course qualified by the 'I f'en live here' or 'if you don't know 'em go 'em'.

Old mate sounds like he's not sure who's who yet. Maybe it's time simply to ask him if he's been led to believe the above theories and point out that while true it only applies to people from elsewhere.

Good luck with the manners lesson.

P.s the above theories are not mine but those perpetuated by surf media etc etc. The above refers to our furthest south point break. Try it at Burleigh where you 'will' be disciplined for such actions.

I used to surf a bit with a bloke called Billy Dews. Top bloke, I think he was a bit of a big wave charger in his day but by the time I knew him he would of been in his 60's and blind as a bat. He surfed an 11 foot Micky Munoz and once you'd surfed with him a few times you learned if he was paddling for a wave to just get out of his way. He copped a bit of stick from crew that didn't know him but in reality, there wasn't much he could do. He just couldn't see that well out in the surf. Not saying that's the case with this bloke but would support those saying to have a chat with him and find out where he's coming from.

Same place same guy dropping in on everybody ffs. But this time there was a LB comp on with both state and national champions competing.

This guy must have a stiff neck because he cant turn his melon to the left,he dropped in on everybody including me on a bomb he fell off and blow my wave, thanks mate

When I'm free surfing and there is a comp on,with whatever craft I tell the guys its your comp just take whatever wave you want its all yours. This guy needs to read the code of conduct.

So, what do YOU do while free surfing and there's a comp on

I go and surf somewhere else. Makes life a lot more bearable. I am over getting angry because people hold a comp and think that they own the place and can drop in on everyone. Now days I just go elsewhere. Life is too short.

I think its time you had a word to him though. Be positive and nice - seems like you will end up helping to make a lot of other peoples surf more pleasent as well.

Feck you are a sooky la la, Makaha told us it was so tough over there.

Oh well will find out soon, on the Goldie for first 2 weeks of Oct looks like I just go and drop in and the locals whinge on a forum "what do I do"

Come on princess you can do better than that - usually involves fins being knocked out and teeth dropping to the floor. Thought they were tougher in cane toad country
