We had a massive swell come in yesterday and I went out this morning hoping to see mother nature at her best. I went for a surf down at PRK but the swell wasn't really coming into the bay as I thought it would and it had come down in size, still had a great time though - I always do when I get wet. Met up with Phil who was getting to know his new PSH 9'6". He had that desperate look of concentration on his face again. But he is going to rip on that thing.

On the way home I took a couple of pics of Bells Beach. I hope you like them.

Hi Guys,

Rich and I yesterday did the" It has to be better at the next spot 200km drive lol"

We went to PRK first but the swell was so big it didnt even wrap the point, it just went straight through and hit the Anglesea Bombie and exploded!!!!!!!!

There were surfable waves but they were not pretty.

So off to Lorne for a look. When I came round the corner at SC there was a clean glassy MONSTER of a wave, Rich saw it too and almost ran into he back of me with his jaw wide open!

It was bigger than anything I have ever seen before, Rich an I estimated the face to be at least 15ft. We tired to find a way to get out to it but is just seemed like suicide

We eventually got to Lorne but it was all over the shop and 70000 of our closest friends were there

Back to PRK and it was worse than before!

We eventually surfed at fisho's PMSL , it was just one of those days. I would still rather have a bad day adventuring around with a mate than anything else.

Rich and I both got lectures from the WAR OFFICE when we finally got home!

But just to see the wave at SC will stay in my memory forever. I so wanted to surf that wave, Rich thought I had lost my mind). I have added that spot to my go and dive it and see what the bottom is like next time its
flat list.

Today I got a great surf at PRK before the tide changed. Oliver was right, when he saw me I was full on in the zone on the 9'6. I got 3 smokers earlier on and I love the way the board surfs. I just need to get 3 times fitter to surf it, when I stop paddling I fall off PMSL.

I paid penance by having to build a floating floor this afternoon with the WAR OFFICE supervising progress. I almost snuck away a couple of times, but did not quite make it.[}:)]

What penance looks like:

Heh, good report Phil and nice pics Oli

Champcrow I used to surf at Lorne as a teenager but havnt been for years. Its a great little town with (from memory) a good point break but Phil and the others would give you a better insight. The good thing about Lorne is all the great breaks within a 20 min drive.

A Pic of SC so much smaller than what we saw yesterday

X 4 and you might get close to what we saw but just as clean

Drools, it was only the 6ft high foam ball in the shorey that put us off PMSL

Love the last pic, I'm also impressed with your floating floor. You should have a beer and pat yourself on the back - another great w/e.

Hey Oliver or Phill,
what was PRN like compared to the midweek surf we had down there a week and a half ago?
Cheers,
Camo.

Hey Camo,

The biggest wave we got mid week was prolly the smallest set I saw yesterday durring a lull at PRK!

There were definitely 10ft+ faces and some much bigger, I saw one set go over the point and hardly loose any momnetum at about 7.30am.

The wave we saw at SC mate truely staggered me!!!!!!!!! Bigger than anything I have seen down that way before and just the perfect wave!

Made cathedral rock look like it was for pussies! It wasnt hollow but it was just pure bone crunching raw power!

Yeah swell was massive yesterday. Apparently my mate had a photo in the Hreald Sun today on page 14? towing but I haven't seen it. Anyone seen it?

Cam and I surfed the Pines early then Zapper and Lefts & Rights and got some really good waves. I need to start taking some photos so I can post 'em.

Hi Camo,

The Waves at the point on or before the low were solid 3ft ++ and it was running all the way to the beach! I got 3 smokers!

Once the tide was up it just got FATTER and FATTER and really didnt wrap the point as Oliver will tell you.

I was out on the 9'6 and once it got fat I was outa the race totally. lol glide what glide, Is it supposed to glide?? All I can do on the 9'6 is sit inside tilt it onto the face and then hold her Luke she's headed for the barn wooo hooo!

A downwind machine it isnt lol

It's amazing how much a difference a low tide makes at PRK.

So you got the PSH 96 going pretty well OG?

Brendon,

I love PSH 9'6 but with my 105kegs on it its just plan hard work! I have to stay in the zone all the time to stay upright PMSL. I think Oliver at first thought I was stoned then when he got closer and saw I was on the 9'6 he realized how hard I was working to stay on.

It has got easier and its only my 3rd time out so not looking for miracles just yet!

When I think I caught my 1st green wave in Nov last year on a 12ft Laird I'm happy I can even catch a wave on the 9'6 as its 2'8 shorter LOL.

I also wanna try Brooko's 8'6 later this year!

I am paddling the 7.2 in the river as much as I can makes the 9'6 feel like an aircraft carrier.

Hey Lobes, that sounds like it. I'll get to check the paper tomorrow.

Phill, sounds like you will be all over it. When I first got my Bonga 10' I really struggled then eventually it was a piece of cake. Then I got the Oxbow 9'6" and strugled a little again but now rarely fall off. My mate had a little trouble on the 9'6 PSH wide and now he goes for paddles on the bay fully clothed with his Staffy on the front (I can't wait till he falls off - it will happen!).

It's just "a matter of time" thing. Soon you will be looking for a 9ft'er!

Biggest I've heard of anyone surfing it is 15-18 foot...would be a freaking nightmare at that size trying to get out past the button.....we surfed it at about 8-10ft and ended up paddling out from southside...many many duckdives....you could probably padlle out from Point addis in a real big swell on a SUP....kiss your ass goodbye if you get caught in the bowl or washed past the Winki button

Now that sounds like a challenge i'm getting a 12-0 San Clemete gun through Ron House and Dale Chapaman could just be a great place to break it in or Break it.

The best time to SUP Bells is when there has been a good size ground swell for a few days & it drops, most people are surfed out, & don't bother with it this small.
High tide Rincon is the go.
You can certainly Sup Bells @ any size but you probaby will have 50 friends with you
These shots are a typical winter day small Rincon August 2007
Tony Chick & myself ......& a couple of Southern Right whales

Thanks for the shots and update on Supping Bells , it's looks bloody cold , sharing it with only 50 would be a pleasant change to the Gold Coast , some days at Snapper or the Alley you can walk acroos the heads.

Are the crowds really that bad in warmer latitudes?

I was thinking of going north for the winter........a 4, 3 & hood is more fun than a crowd in my book.
Many days over the past 2 weeks have had waves similar to the shots......I was looking for company!
The problem was when a set came......what wave should I take?

PS, Yes it can get cold in late winter........wind chill near zero
Maybe thats why no one is out?

You'll cop a bit of lip if there's a bunch of guys out (bells or winki). But you're more likely to get bells with less crowd and less lip. Most of the people that surf Bells these days are the crew from out of town so they don't know who's local or not. Also if it's only 2 to 3ft then it will usually be pretty quiet, like LSD said.

I've been there a few times recently in clean 2ft+ with only 2 or 3 people in the water.
If it's busy though I stay away and leave it to the prone guys. There's plenty other options around!

Surfed Bells early january this year and being the only sup in the water with all short boarders I wonded what the reception would be like. The surf was about 4ft and after calling the close out sets coming a few times the crew turned out to be quite friendly. On the last wave I got hammered and lost my paddle and without there help from the clifftop I would not of found it.By the time I got in the onshore wind was really blowing and i had hells own problem carrying the board back to the stairs.Great wave though.
