This will probably stir a minor hornets nest, and there is no real need to aim insults back at anyone, but here goes;

I wouldn't mind seeing an athlete of the calibre of Ben Cousin's in the BOP, or Inter Island, in Hawaii !! Bring a big result back to Aus !!

I think he has the power, fitness, endurance, dedication, etc, to knock off the likes of Danny Ching, and Dave Kalama... !

He seemed to be surfing OK on Part 2 (?) of his recent doco. You never know, a target like this might even help starve off a relapse....

PS;
Just throwing it out there ! Ben is pretty good at polarising opinions... Even though the doco didn't answer every question under the sun, he also has a reasonable right not answer every question.... Plus there isn't much to be gained by kicking a man on the way back up.... there was pretty obvious pain coming from his dad Brian, even if Ben has his emotions in check....

Ben is obviously an amazing athlete but blokes like Travis and Danny Ching have spent years training and perfecting their stroke and technique. No matter how good an athlete you are I don't think it makes up for years perfecting the specific techniques of each individual sport.

Don't worry about a footy player ,imagine Kenny Wallace,Clint Robo or Zane Holmse on Stand ups.
Ever watched the Olympic C1 canoe race with the back knee dropped down, absolutely awesome paddlers, imagine those guys on Stand Ups?
With athletes and drugs, we still deal with Peter Jacksons [State of Origin 1990] heroin addiction and passing. The pain is still there 15 years later.

Slightly off topic but after the "cuzzie diaries" do we need to be secretive about the semi secret spot up North anymore
Just with millions of people watchin and the name plastered all over the screen I think the place is well and truly outed now.
I know some crew have strong views on this so Im curious on the reactions of the crew who wont name it[}:)].

Why feel the need to name it? There are plenty more popular, accessible breaks e.g. on the east coast, down south, etc that people still don't name. The less publicity the better IMHO.

Just because He might be a great athlete doesn't mean he would be any good at Paddling.

Most footy players aren't the best surfers / water people in general but they are very good at anything on land.

I beg to differ about him being a good paddler.

I agree Legion.

Also why would you want to see a tosser like Cousins on a SUP, I agree with Angie, most footy players would make crap water athletes anyways.

I sometimes agree with Legion, but not on this point. This idea of secret spots and not naming places seems so retarded. Why not just shut down this forum the internet and australia's migration policy. Getting upset about a place being named just draws further attention to it - and gives your secret spot more targeted publicity. Where was it again?

Ben would be a very good endurance athlete , elite midfielders cover up to 20Ks a game running hard.He aslo is a lifelong surfer so i guess he would have a feel for it.Id hate to burst the bubble of the currant top paddlers around the place , but as sup racing is still a relative unknown sport it probably wont attract the best athletes untill it becomes one.

You cant tell me , even a guy as good as Dave Kalama or Slater trout could compete against an olympic endurance athlete from a paddling sport , like rowing or canoing.

Any way just an opinion , wouldnt be the first time i was barking up the wrong tree.

Overseas spots like the Maldives are expensive and difficult to get to. Places like the NW are unique to OZ and really don't need the publicity IMO. Fark, do the research and find out for yourself.

Teatree, I don't quite agree with your comment re endurance athletes from other paddle sports. I reckon the top SUP paddlers would take a lot of catching up to after years spent in trecherous difficult conditions like those found in Hawaii. Maybe the crew from OC but not the flatwater canoeing or rowing fraternity. Most of em wouldn't know what to do with a single paddle.

Hey Goatman maybee , obviousley theirs more to the sport than just pure grunt , but these athletes have the advantage of being just that , full time athletes have acces to the best trainers sports science and can train without the worry of work ect.

I think if this sport ever takes off bigtime and their is big money involved , it will attract more athletes from other sports.

This topic made think of the Roar comp i think Trev Hendy came second to billy watson in the paddle race , he was on an inferior board (in my opinion) and still took it to him.And i would guess quite a few years older and possibly not doing anywhere near the training he was at his peak.

Full time proffesional athletes are very fit people , i would guess their are not to many full time proffesional downwind racers at the moment?

But in saying that if the likes of the top paddlers had the opportuniy to train full on , and get all the support other athletes get , they probably would be better again.

Sorry for the rant , but ive been on the Rumbos and i like Ben Cousins.

Have a look on you tube at C1 white water olympic final.
Then the 500 meter C1 final . Not to take any thing from the top SUP guys ,but just for pure strength , technique and endurance these guys are unbelievable.

Hate to burst your bubble but C1 slalom and 500 m sprints are not endurance sports.

C1 slalom not a marathon ,but pretty tough.C1 is raced over marathon distances, the 500 m was just an example of powerful use of the single blade paddle.

Check out german canoe federation and canadian canoe /kayak for a reality check on where we are in the world of paddle sports

I was heavily involved in C1 slalom and had friends who hung in and went on to win Olympic medals. A slalom takes 2 minutes - hardly comparable to a 5 hour Molokai race.

It is a niche sport as is flat water sprinting. The vast majority are not full time athletes.

Guys like Kalama and Trout would be as close to full time athletes as most of the flatwater and slalom crew

No doubt the standard will increase as more people get into it, especially those from other paddle disciplines.

When the big outrigger clubs look to recruit star paddlers for their teams for big events many of the paddlers are from Kayak and surf ski backgrounds.

Check the backgrounds on the ladies below. Ironwomen, olympic athletes etc.

They are tipped to do pretty well in the channel as well. These ladies cleaned up the majors in the last year. Put 'em on a SUP and you would have some very strong competition right out of the gates.

Could'nt disagree more...Cousins and the BOP in the same sentence when the guy hasn't even supped. you might as well chuck in Mundine's name.

There would be far better pics right here on this site rather than Mr "Such Is Life"
