From what I understand of Bert video, a small squash or round pin is just for the looks. The area change between them is not significant compared to the whole section. Plus the water release comes from the rail shape at the junction with the hull. Look how sharp it is on the video, for the cleanest release.
This is why Starboard 2017 "two boards in one" gimmick of interchangeable tails was short lived, nor used by anybody else. Pure marketing, the area change was so small. Fins ore even the kickpad placement is much more important.
