Have been lucky enough to use a wide range of shortboard style sups recently from 9 6 to 10 foot all between 130l and 155l. Corban, PSH and JL; not an exhaustive list by any stretch of the imagination should have tried Tim's naish 9 6 as well as he is doing really well on it.

Remember this is for larger folk I know the 8 footers rip but I sink them.

The good thing is they all work pretty well so if you have one you are on a winner.

After time on the PSH WR, then the 10 foot wood veneer custom, corban performer and JL Mano I think at the moment the best shortboard popout for heavier riders is the JL Mano 9 9.

Very stable due to thinner rails I think, very fast and loose on the wave. The narrow nose with heaps of rocker makes late drops a joy and has really low swing weight. The stability issue is weird I find smaller boards as long as I do not sink more stable than bigger boards now. If some of the board is under water the chop does not seem to effect it as much IMO.

Still love my PSH but will have to extend the quiver.

Hi Hilly,
I am glad you are finding out what traits smaller boards can have, the submerged tail is a very effective way of adding stability without having to go wider, its just a matter of tayloring the volume to the rider

This was really evident when I swapped from a JL to the Naish 11 6 in a bit of chop and could not stand on the 11 6. Kept falling off as every bit of chop and wind bounced the big light girl around, very funny for everyone else out at the time.

The PSH 9 6 WR used to sink a lot but was not that stable for me as it had fuller rails I think and was 139l. The JL Mano at 135l feels more stable. Both the same width about 29 inches but the WR has a thinner tail. The wider JL and Corban tail helps stability I think. Great in small waves not sure about larger waves.

For my 105kg the right volume seems to be 135l plus with 150l being easy. Is that similar to what you would use?

A shaper in Hawaii was pushing this theory by doing exaggerated step rails. Idea was that the water on top of the board reduced the tippyness.

Been on the 9'6" WR for 4.5 months now, & although it initially seemed a bit tippier than the 9'8" *board, I'm very comfortable with it, even with a bit of chop. But then, it helps to be a small lightweight (174cms, 73 kgs). If the Mano you're referring to Hilly is the 9'9", it's actually 5/8" narrower than the WR. Marty gave me a go last winter at Centres. Super-stable (fair bit of wind chop around that day), much more so than the 9'4" (naturally: 1" narrower) that I also tried that day.
However, I wasn't taken with the huge rocker, & actually found it was a bit "corky" for me. Although the 9'9" Shredder (Mano?) & the 9'6" WR are the same thickness, rails look thicker (to me) on the Shredder.
Hanging out to try it in some decent surf (had nothing over chest-high in 4.5 months ). Hopefully South or Lano in the very near future. 3.5m swell forecast for Thursday. Now if that bloody wind would back off....................................

I have the JL Mano 9'9 and I agree with Hilly, it's a good combination of fast and loose. It's definitely the fastest board down the line that I have tried. That includes the Naish 9'6, Coreban 9'6 and My Surfshapes 10'. Speed down the line is subjective of course but I mainly surf fastish beach breaks and you don't make it out the end on a slow board. At 85kg + 2 for christmas, I'm loving the board as my everyday ride. Haven't had the chance to try it in any size yet but I would be very surprised if it didn't perform well. It has enough length to paddle into small mushy stuff easily and doesn't yaw anywhere near as much as the 9'6s. Even though it has a lot of nose rocker, it doesn't have too much tail rocker which may be it's speed secret.

Hey hilly,

nice to hear more triple figure dudes out there on the water, I've tried naish 12" glide, 14" glide, 11.6" and 10" mana on both flat and sea and from what you've said rings bells for me. Larger floaty boards which i thought i needed i found even with days dedicated to them v.tippy and being so tall and wide anything under 29inch my toes are gripping the edge ( then i talked to a wind-surfer and he surgested that a closer foot stance would allow the board to look after its self - with the swell leading foot inched forward to counter the yaw - did work to an extent however still spent a fair amount of time in the water climbing out) So a 31inch 4 3/4 10.4 'emery' custom is what i settled on ( see pics ) as you say the tail is slightly submerged in motion and feels wonderful compared to the mana 10" which would sink or stall if i was an inch away from the sweet spot. Still i wait for the day i have better board control as i would love a 12 glide for surfing or juli' rocks runs ( the speed - oh mamma )

Mandurah thurs if interested

Thommo is right the speed it generates is amazing that's why I think larger stuff the 9 9 may be a bit difficult. High speed and widish tail will make it hard to drive a serious bottom turn IMHO. Could be wrong have one now so will find out.

i swapped my 8'8 dc with a mates 9'6 mac out in the surf thinking this would be a piece of cake. not so, every ripple was knocking the board around and when i got back on my board, i had the wobbles for a few minutes. i prefer to have my tails a bit under water, seems to be something i can deal with rather than sitting up out and on top of the water
cheers

closer foot stance
- Yes good idea closer the better less movement needed

Yeah....my weight at around 78kg & a board volume of around 110kg? is very similar to your residual buoyancy of 30L
When I shaped the current board I thinned the tail a fair bit & was concirned it would become too uncomfortable to stand on in rough water but its fine with the tail awash, stabilising the roll & a tad of pitch.
