Note to Laurie. Perhaps a filter for these guys fraudulantly contacting people would be to withold contact info unless the browser is a member. My initial response to this suggestion might be that it may slow the volume of people just using the site to buy and sell but this process is pretty easy. It may also be advised that you only contact buyers via the PM system as it has a location warning. Ie guy tells you he is Perth but his IP address is from South Africa it gives you a warning.

I was selling a mtb a while back go to the end and a guy sent me a check for $9999.00 Aus said I could keep and extra $1k on top of the price. Catch was I had to give him the remainder when he came to pick up the bike. Figured out pretty quick he was trying to launder money through me - the African address on the card was a big tip as well.

Our filters are pretty good, but like the spam in your inbox, it's an ongoing quest to keep blocking them as they come up with new strategies.

We could restrict to "members only", but I've not been a fan of sites which force you to join just so you can enquire about something for sale.

Regardless whether internet, private mail, phone or face to face, you've always got to be alert for scammers!

I agree with you with regards to the joining as a member for buy and sell as it it is restrictive for sure. Saying that though, your process is pretty simple and if the seller puts a good amount of info on the listing to begin with not a dramatic process to complete if you were indeed serious about buying.

All good though, as you say, scammers are everywhere. You need to have your wits about you these days buying and selling. Thanks Laurie.

It's not hard. With PayPal transactions you just need to check your account to see if the money is in there. Never ever trust an email.

I would probably add never trust any complicated arrangements. There is nothing terribly difficult in the "You give me money. I give you stuff." model of commerce.

I've got a sailboard for sale and just got a private email from '[email protected]' asking whether it was still for sale, so I thought I'd do a seacrch on his address and came up with this thread. I've emailed him back already saying it is still for sale. It'll be interesting to see how the correspondence transpires ...
