Was down there today for close on three hours.

I'm pretty sure I got some of the best rides of my life today. I believe that 'cause I'm replaying the rides in my mind as I write this.

For the first hour I had the break all to myself. I got out there midday - about an hour after high tide. It wasn't a huge swell but it was glassy and the bigger waves peaked and broke consistently in the same place and mellowed out - probably just under head high.

In the next hour a goat boater joined me, the swell had seemed to increase. We chatted together between sets - I've met him before and we just continued on from when we last spoke, probably 5 months ago, discussing all sorts of issues.

As the tide was coming down, a long boarder paddled up and we were all having a great chat. Turns out he was a farm manager for one of the 70 acre properties that line the Flinders to Cape Shank Coastline. All of us getting waves, of the same vintage, discussing all the man issues we are dealing with in our lives - 1km out at sea.

The next hour brought us another stand up paddler and another two mals - again around the same vintage as me. The SUP guy was a bit of a card, making lots of jokes and generally being eccentric and making us all laugh.

I was pretty buggered by this stage but paddled back happy with my man time at Big Left and the fun waves I caught.

Thanks doc for that cynical comment.

The card, Woody, was everything Oliver should be. He had all the gear, was fit, slim, with hair - probably about thirty five, he was telling everyone in the lineup that he was wearing a heated wetsuit, and making impromptu and inipropriate jokes about how warm he was in his wetsuit and engaging everyone out there - I was really buggered but took the time to enjoy the moment.

I guess today was just one of those random times, that made me feel really good about pushing 50, together with a whole lot of other like minded people, out almost 1km out at sea, laughing at ourselves, forgetting our demons, and each hoping to out do each other on the next big wave on the looming set on the horizon.
