Tomorrow (Thursday 3rd Dec) is looking good for a classic down-winder with perfect conditions.

At this stage we're looking at a 10-10.30 am start from St Kilda and finish at Sandy and should take about an hour to an hour and a half.

DJ

tending southwesterly during the afternoon then tending westerly 15 to 25 knots
later in the evening. Seas: 0.5 to 1 metres increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres

I'll think of you while sitting in a dentist's chair for close enough to 2 hours

Cant make it tomorrow DJ but we are thinking of coming up on Sunday.

Would it be possible to borrow a glide to try out?

I only come out for "mega" downwinders, when they fall on the w/e. Can't wait for the next one though.

Coming home from work I thought of night paddles on the Yarra again.

Sounds like fun. I have a nice and gentle pre-work early morning paddle on the Yarra planned for tomorrow. Just got to avoid the submerged tree branches.

I think our spiritual leader may have some words about upcoming night paddles in the near future. Stay tuned Woody.

Been yonks since the last night paddle - look forward to it. Maybe JohnDavid would be up for it on his stand up canoe.

We meet at the boatsheds opp Fed square about 7-7.30.

We usually head down through the city and under the Bolty bridge and around the docklands and get back about 9ish.

DJ, What sort of safety gear do you carry on your down winders?
Do you have a bumbag pfd, epirb, flares, etc?
Conditions on the surfcoast were perfect for a long run along the coast, flat with strong wsw....but a bit more of a risk than the bay, mainly because if the wind decides to go back off shore, as the westerlys sometimes do......in 45knt+....your buggered?
Might be time to make a board for the job....any recomendations for the conditions here?

For todays down-winder all I had was my new DaKine bum-bag Camelbak... That's about it for today's run..

Dean.. You just need to make yourself something like the 14' Naish.. and I'm sure you can make it much lighter..

Here's a few pics from today.

On the last downwinder I wore a hydration pack and had some fruit and a mobile in a waterproof pack.

It was winter and I had a full-on wettie with a hat. The wettie is probably the prime survival aid. It's bouyant and I could probably survive a night adrift sitting on a board.

The other survival aid is over 30 years of experience in bobbing around in the sea in extreme conditions. We monitored the situation the whole time and adapted to conditions well before anything became a problem. I stayed with my mate, Paul. Oliver paddled well inshore at the appropriate places. Only DJ and Haro went out to sea at all and they knew exactly what they were doing.

There was a fair bit of discussion after a later downwinder where a newbie was chasing every runner he could get and was heading off into the sunset. Mainly about the responsibility of the rest of the crew for strays and add-ons to the group.

Apart from offering timely advice all you can really do is call in a rescue. I guess at the peak of altruism you could keep the errant person company while waiting for rescue. Unless you're super dude there's no way you could paddle way downwind to retrieve someone.

You are absolutely correct. It's hard enough to get a SUP to go crosswind in 45 knots let alone paddle into wind. The wind and swells firmly push the nose downwind as soon as you turn the board.
