Both would work in a West NW and would take around two or three hours in a group. Crossing the channel is a bit of an issue, but hey Laird did it OK. Just cross over as a group should be fine.

Life jackets probably sensible - probably get hassled by water police or coast guard, I'll take my marine radio and mobile in a waterproof case.
