What's the go with the starboard blade areas on the website.... They can't be that small. Ie a small QB is 90. Then 100 then 110. Starboard is 77, 85, 93...... Can anyone shed some light...

Nope.

In our household we have a couple of starby paddles (among others), how they measure area is a complete mystery to me...like airline ticket pricing, italian politics, and women. My 550 enduro feels a helluva lot bigger than 85sq in (feels more like a QB100 or 105 Ke Nalu IMO).

Yeah exactly, I like the qb 100 size.... But wanted to know the Starby eq. Sounds like the 550.

It's almost like the early days of kites.... Projected area v's flat area.....

one is centimetres, the other is inches, i.e 550 square centimetres = 85 square inches.

metric vs imperial

arrrr.......yes you are correct.....^2 cm divided by 6.45 gets you sq inches... thats not the question though, what is the correlation between company sizes...they are all miles out.

I've got both the QB Kahana 100 & the Starby High Aspect 600 (93sq in.). I personally prefer the Starby but when you put the two side by side the surface area is not much different, suffice to say the high aspect is longer and narrower in the blade design and QB wider, shorter and slightly bigger surface area. I had a look at the two smaller high aspect paddles and imo they are to small. I suspect they would be more suited to small women or children. I saw an interesting video from Danny Ching, he believes in a larger paddle and if you want to up your stroke rate you just don't put as much blade in the water. When you want power you then have enough blade size to bury when you want.

The advice I was given was the the 550 starboard high aspect is equivalent to the 100 QB????

Its interesting, there appears to be a swing to smaller blades in Sydney, compared to qld. similar sized guys running two sizes smaller.....

either way the speed seems the same. they r all quick.

Im going 100.

I've got the Starby 550, but I reckon it's in between the QB sml and med. The confusion on the size stated could be that Starby quote size on the moulded shape of the blade i.e having to use a flexi tape measure to follow the curves to get the dimensions. This would give a greater area total for the blade than just doing a straight line measurement. Don't know this is the case, just a theory, as I had the exact same dilema when choosing a paddle. BTW cannot fault the Starby, other than the full carbon shaft is a little stiff for my liking.
