Just a Question - What makes a board fast , is it the rocker the tailshape?Sorry two questions what type of board would be best for tube riding and for you blokes or Ladies , that have done this on a SUP , how. Also is it easier to ride in the tube on your backhand or frontside. One other , and how do you avoid being caned by the board when it closes out.

Cheers

Cannot beat the PSH 12er for barrels; thin pintail holds no matter what. But it is not nice to get sucked over with lots of board to give you a beating. Narrower the board the better.

Rocker controls speed. Flat fast, more rocker control but slower.

It is a compromise as rarely are waves just fast barrels. It is fun to turn as well and you need to position and stall for most barrels.

IMO - the best boards for tube riding are shortboards and high performance mals. I am sure you will get plenty of feedback from the "gun" sup riders around who have had a cover up or a head dip and claimed it as a tube ride but the real tube rides (on sups) are few and far between in this country. From my experiance on mals and to a certain degree - shortys - the secret seems to be not so much the board as good positioning on the the right wave. Of course a board with more rocker is obviously going to fit better into the curl of the face and the ability to turn easier but there is no substitute for talent/wave/ticker.

Rocker, rails, V's, concaves and board shape (outline).. There are heaps of factors.. The main one being rocker IMO.

But then you can get a board that goes slow on one wave and like a rocket on another type of wave.. It's tricky stuff.

Ive seen the PSH 12 it looks like a monster board to be getting barreled on , i would have thought more for the big fat ones.I guess though it all comes down to the rider.

As far as I am concerned SUP boards are definitely not the greatest for barrels. The length definitely doesn't help and neither does the width. I'm not saying it isn't possible to get barreled on a SUP but it's not ideal. I've had a fair few barrels on them, but they are nothing to compare to a shortboard barrel because you can not fit into a barrel nearly as well on a SUP.

I have to disagree about a big board for barrels. Sure the narrowness of it helps but trying to put a 12 footer in a barrel is a lot harder than something smaller. In my opinion the best board for barrel riding would be something fairly narrow and as small as you can go.

Oh and as far as pulling in backhand or forehand goes. I think I speak for most people when I say it is a sh1tload easier on your forehand. The fact that your facing the wave really seems to make a difference and you seem to be able to fit into a lot tighter spaces.

oh and re being caned by the board. That's just luck and it can be very hard to escape

my 2 cents

The main point I was making was a pintail is good (He asked what effect tail shape has) and a sup is a lot of fiberglass to go over the falls with (He asked how you avoid getting caned, you cannot if you go for it).

The 12er handles big barrels very well. I prefer back hand easier to slot in I think. Mainly lefts over here. Greenroom saw it on some steep ones last weekend he may be able to comment, no serious barrels for me though. Greenroom did get seriously slotted but did not come out thank god or I was dead. He was on a 9 8 by 28 Starboard with a big swallow tail, so as people are saying it is down to the rider.

Do a search on tube riding I think there was a long thread with photos.

Billboard come on over we can get a head dip together at boatramps or tombstones.

Thanks for the replies , all good! Is it easier to get set up for a barrel though seeing you can get into the wave much earlier.Expecially if its a wave that barrels once it hits the shallows.
Talking about barrels i read in the local rag the Goldcoast city council has pulled the plug on dredging Kirra point.Wankers

About the board hitting you thing...I've learnt (From being hit a lot) that you get hit a lot less and cop a much weaker flogging if to stay in the barrell as long as you can....

Just fight it Fight it and fight it and try to stay in there on your feet even when its hopeless (And huge/dry/rocky whatever). Eventually the foam ball will twist you off. If you've gotta fall, always fall toward toward the way out and try to penetrate hands first to protect your head , even if there less water than rock and always fall toward the front of the board.

Falling behind the board into the wave face or foam ball leads to you planning often into the board/ fins and or EVEN WORST up and over the falls onto the board or with it or both. Sometimes twice. Long Hold downs and big punishment.

Sometimes in really big barrels when they close out = if you just stay with them long enough and get deep enough you barely get hammered at all...you can sort of get spat out the back with all the air after it closes out. THIS IS DEFINATLY THE PLAN ON DRY CLOSEOUTS. DONT BAIL. STAY WITH IT MR X STYLE. (DID you ever see the Mr X Soul arch in the 80's straight into 15ft Pipe closeout???? SICK MAN but he knew....) Othertimes its worst. Law of averages...Most times its better to be as deep/far away from the lip as possible.

The negative to this story of fight it...fight it ...stay in the barrel is that you will break more boards. But youll also get admiring stares from people that think your a total sick mutha****er.(When your actually just going deep to save your skin).

Agree with hilly on two things, I like getting barreled on my backhand better and the only decent tube I could claim was backside (on my shortboard plenty of times)

No worries about getting shacked in wa a fella called damon eastough seems to do it alright on a sub, you could get a zodiac barreled at boodji , ive see it happen
