Planning trip to Bali tossing up re hire or take my own board...

What experiences with the various airlines and SUP boards?

I assume 9'5 Hokua should be ok. 10'4 too big?

Heard Garuda, Virgin are ok any other infos / options

Cheers

Strongly recommend you investigate those 2 as I think policies have recently changed with some airlines for the worst. I think Virgin have made it harder and more expensive not sure about Garuda. Air Asia have made it easier/cheaper but have a bad rep re damage. Personally been to Sumatra twice on Air Asia and no damage but they did leave my SUP board bag in Padang one trip, fortunately got it back before next flight. Check under sporting equipment policy. Check prices on Bali SUP hire before you leave as it may be comparable to your excess baggage cost.

Cheers for that

Airasia: Must not exceed 277 cm or 109 inches in height so up to 9'1...

Virgin: Maximum Length 3.00 metres in length so up to 9'11...

Was looking at hire off Jankie but the Kwad 9'7 not avail so looking might just take the 9'5 Hokua should be good size for the spot and ok to travel with...

I took a 9'6 first trip on Air Asia no one gets a tape measure out as far as I know. Unless you got a real big board they probably don't worry to much. Maybe get there early to check it in so no hassles in the check in line.

PS check Air Asia new policy on sporting equipment as looks like they are including it as general luggage and you pre pay on line which is a good result. Maybe Google it as some sites explain it better than the Air Asia site. I did it just today as looking to go to Indo soon.

I recommend Air Asia and reckon you would be ok with the 10'4 even.

I checked before I went to Bali in July, I couldn't see much about maximum length online so I call them because I was originally thinking of taking my 10'2 Mano and it fit within their limits.
Can't really remember what the limit was, I think it was either 3.2 or 3.5mtrs but either way my 10'2 would have been ok, 3.2mtrs is around 10'4.
,
I booked an extra 40kg of sporting gear (around $50 from memory) and took absolutely everything.
A 9'2 SUP, 6'2 surfboard, 5'9 kite surfboard, 3 kites paddle harness etc = 38kg, no worries.

Heading back in March but just taking the SUP and paddle this time so should only cost me an extra $20 each way
.
Return flights with extra sporting goods both ways for under $300, happy days

Too be honest by the time you pay for the sports equipment both ways and taxi's at each end prob cheaper to hire when you get there, I am going over in November and booked a JL quad for 6 days for about $80 delivered to the door with paddle.

Came back from Bali on saturday and took a PSH 8"9, flew Virgin no problems.
It was good to have my own board and paddle over there and no issues travelling around Bali, just take some soft racks, I was tempted to try the scooter with racks but ckickened out... good to hear someone has done it!! maybe next time.
First time supping over there and loved it!!
