What an awesome show - really enjoyed it. Thanks for the heads up.

Some of the interesting bits:
- at one point surfers had to get a license (5 quid) and register their boards because of the danger caused of them (by registering, meant you could lose your 'license')

- surfers were initially part of the surf life saving clubs because their boards were too big to take home and they had to stash them somewhere

- guys were surfing massive waves at North Shore(?) and looked like they got crunched every time (no jet skis buzzing around)

Great doco, & fascinating to see that crowds & maniacs on almost uncontrollable boards were alive & kicking in the 50's/60's!!! Everyone who whinges about a sup in the lineup should watch that doco!

Another interesting point was Bob McTavish and his mate just strolling onto the ship and sailing to Hawaii with their mates. No ticket. Just a little travel bag with 5 pairs of boardies. Makes you proud to be Australian.

Yeah, it really was an interesting show full of some great stories. Some of the shots at the start were breathtaking. I had no idea that you needed to have a licence to surf.

I liked the bit about the peroxide and the decore shampoo.

being a 60,s child all that was said is true, clubbies were the darks side to us,really did confiscate you board if they could catch you,i paddled a clubbie swimmer to freshwater cos i was surfing into the flags at queenscliffe,he didnt catch me but i stuck to mid steyne after that.funny bout mctavish tho,i thought he got caught on the boat,he made the headlines because of it and started the mctavish legend.loved the sixties and we were gremmies not grommets.groms started way later.

i stand corrected on mctavish being caught on the boat,it seems he was sprung by the officials when he was painting the house at sunset, then he was deported, that was straight from a good mate of bobs, still a very magic time in my life, the whole of the 60s at manly were pretty good.
