Hi all,
I snapped my ankle leggie last weekend so I’m after a new one.
I’ve noticed that a lot of Sup’ers are using calf leg ropes. I guess it’s a personnel thing but any feedback would be appreciated?
I ride an 11 foot board.

I find in big waves it can hurt when the board gets dragged. I also seem to wrap the leggie around my leg more when on my calf..

Good thing about my calf leggie is that it also works on the ankle so I have both options.

hey Ian, try the creatures range of leggies 10 or 12ft outreef or pro longboard I think both have angle & or knee set up? I was using the 10ft knee pro longboard leggie the other morning when we meet, I think it comes down to personal preference, it would great if you could try both? cheer's mark

Use a calf leggie too. Don't get to ride big waves based in Perth, so can't comment, but it was fine in chest- to head-high surf around Margaret River way when I managed to get down there 3 weeks ago.
However, leash seems to have a tendency to wrap around my arm or even my neck (damn!) more than on my old 9' longboard, & I had a calf leggie on that. Probably due to the fact that it's longer.

Apart from the ankle just above or below the knee seems to be the go.

Particularly in larger surf it means a whole lot less stress on your knee joint as the board gets pulled away from you. Hips are tough they can take the punishment but kness on the other hand are a different story...

As mollydooka said the higher you go the more likely you are to tangle or catch the leash as it takes up the slack and they also noticeably flap about a bit more when you ride.

For what it's worth I have seen surfboard leashes pull out more than one knee joint (not mine thankfully, not even on a particularly big dayn and not a particularly big boards) and after that you will never see me riding an ankle leash

Hi as a kite, do you walk your 11 footer? If yes, it's a calf , if no, an ankle should do the job.
Calf leggies were developed for walking up and down a longboard, the idea is you dont stand on them as much because there higher up. Having said that plenty of good longboarders don't use a leggy at all. Personal preference once again. It's a bit like the recent fin discussion, everyones different, due to style, and board size and design. And the area not touched on is how you ride certain sized boards. For instance on 10-6 AA,I would always be looking to noseride this type of a board, which entails at least a 8-5" inch deep fin to hold the tail of the board in wave. A 6-5 inch centre fin is no dought going to be looser, but imho if you whant to noseride this baby you may need to perfect your helecopter manouver. The 9-6, and shorter boards are less likely to break free with a smaller centre fin. Oh I know i've jumped around a little bit here, sorry, and my comments are directed at sup performance even though i related a longboard as an example, cheers. Rodriguez

I had a calf leggie and the wrap was a touch too short so that a little bit of the hook velcro was exposed and in contact with my wetsuit. It wore a hole through the suit in about a week.

It was a RipCurl Ultimate Elasto. They replaced the leg under warranty and said don't do it again and I've been an ankle leggie person ever since.

I never trip on the leggie on the board but I do when walking up the beach.

I used to like to cross step on my 11 footer, so I used a calf strap leggie. I did find it used to get tangled a fair bit though, around the fins, the paddle and me. On one wipeout it actually wrapped around my wrist and ripped the paddle out of my hand. Now I have a 9'6 and use a shorter ankle strap leggie because I don't cross step on it and I hav'nt had any tangle issues.
