I am heading to Fiji in 2 weeks With the family and enquired about checking in my 12' Sup. Air Pacific state their limit is 2.92metres (about 9'8") for check-in luggage and they palmed me off to Qantas air freight. Qantas are asking $500 one way (tell em he's dreaming). I have arranged for Sup hire for the 2 weeks at a cost of $500 AUS.
After reading DW & Ang's posts I am starting to wonder if I can get my Sup on as check-in luggage. Any tips and idea of costs ?

Hey scotty,

Our travel agent got it written into our tickets and we had no drama's with the boards, in fact they told us they can take up to 17ft!! but i wouldnt want to test that.

We did have to pay for the race boards as they are classed as a Bulky item but it wasnt much $.

Maybe contact your travel agent and get them to call up and check for you, that's all i do every time.

However my travel agent informed me that they can only take the long race boards if your on a 737 plane with air pacific.

The only other airline i know of that have got an excellant sporting policy is "Virgin Atlantic", they allow canoe's and sup's up to 4.0m! Stoked!!

Hope you sort it out.

XX angie

Had no dramas last year taking an 8.8 with Air Pacific. However the 8.8 was taped to my young blokes 5.10 and my 6.4 all bound up with gaffer tape and bubble wrap and a paddle strapped to the lot. All good, no extra charges. If you are going out to one of the islands on the Malolo Cat watch out cos those crew know how to gouge you and their not afraid to poke around in the packaging to make sure you only have one board per board bag! From memory they charge about 50 bucks Fijian per board.
Cheers

At 120kg my SB days are over. As I mentioned the other day, my last surf was G-land circa 1995. Before that was a few surfs at my local in early 90's. After 20 years of not surfing, Sup has given me a way back to the surf. The Naish Mana is on the wish list and I will be seeing you out Port Hacking in early spring.

Treasure Island is great, if they are still doing the trips back to the mainland to the village most of the employees come from do it. Very humbling to visit the school and meet some of the local community, also a great lunch with the family of one of the staff there.

Just rock up to the airport with as much gear as you want (That's international Airlines). Remembering you're a loud 30 kg of baggage + 7 kg carry on luggage. After you have used your 30 kg it will then cost you $15 per kilo class + $50 a board bag. every time I travel I'm always paying $600 in excess baggage ( if you Wana play you have to pay). the only thing I hate about travelling is carrying all yours s##t to and from the airport terminal. But do yourself a favour never fly with British airlines or New Zealand those airlines are a joke I have sued New Zealand for a lot of money for damaging my surfboard. I should have done the same with British airlines.

I love Fiji

The good lady wife tells me that Treasure is serviced by South Sea Island Cruises, Different boat, not the Malolo Cat but probably same sort of baggage rules. Should leave from Denirau but check with your travel agent. Back in the late eighties through to mid nineties the missus used to work as a Fiji wholesaler for a bloke who owned a photagraphic business in Aus and an island in Fiji. When he was over here looking after business she would be sent over there to look after the island and vice versa. Being the lucky sucker I was I would get sent over to keep her company on a regular basis. Got to the point where I was being flown over for long weekends!! Life sucked. Added bonus was because of the rapport between all of the owner, managers the welcome mat was always out at Tavarua. I went through two passports worth of Fiji between 88 and 98, then kids happened!!!! Anyway, sort it out with your travel agent and have a cracka ya lucky bugga.
Cheers

Yeh, South Seas Island Cruises go from Denaru to most of the islands daily. If budget allows I am going to pick up a Go-pro before and post some vids and pics. Keen for a daily paddle to Beachcomber and back. The selling point for Treasure Island is the small size (approx 800m long & 400 wide). Love a morning paddle around the island to burn off the 3 daily buffets and s---loads of Fiji Bitter I will be drinking with the Mrs.
