I've been working on this for a while now.. Yesterday I put it together.. Today I tested it while paddling around St Kilda.. It positions the GoPro camera in a better position than on the board looking up (I think).. Now I'm looking forward to using it on a down-winder.. What do you think, better or worse than the low angle board mount?

Looks like a better angle, but i am concerned after the last time you worked on improving something you ended up swinging from a beacon for a few hours

That is genius! Can you give us a sneak preview of what the mount looks like? Did you you fit FCS plugs on your board to secure the mount? I am looking to put a mount on my 14' Naish glide - any suggestions would be appreciated. Cheers

That's awesome DJ. I've been planning exactly the same thing but haven't got around to executing it. I'd love to see the mechanics to compare.

You could maybe tilt I'd down a fraction so you don't have any empty sky above your head and see more water around you.

The rear facing view of someone on your tail is epic.

I don't think it'd work that well (too wobbly) and wouldn't be strong enough in decent surf.

Thanks.. I'll take a couple of pics today showing how it's made.

I like how it doesn't curve of the horizon like other views do.. I'm not sure why.. Maybe because it's in the center of view.

Very interested in your development. So far I have had terrible results from my wrist mount & paddle mount. I just bought the head strap but my kids forbid me to use it because it is so dorky looking.
Maybe the DJ invention is what's needed. Look forward to seeing what makes it tick (before the patent starts.)

Loved the angle DJ. Ever the innovator and brilliant aspect for Downwinders!! I reckon it would look fantastic on a SUP or Surfboard looking back into a barrel for instance. Well done, but given its height could you impale yourself on it?

Great angle. Much better than the suction mount.

Much better viewing angle. Gaffa tape and plumbers pvc pipe, you can make anything. Not sure I want to see a vid of you "getting ramed from behind" DJ but nice innovation. Lol

Here's my vid from todays down-winder.. and another test for my GoPro mount.

The wind dropped from 25-30 to only 10-15 by the time we hit the water.. Still good fun with a few nice runners.

Noticed that Super Cheap Auto has a heavy duty dent puller for about $9 that could be modified as a base mount onto the board rather than black duct tape.

JT, i thought the reference to a dent puller was going to be a reference to me running into DJ's board

^very tidy DJ.

Just thinking out loud but I saw some big, wide, aggressive white Velcro with sticky backing at Clark rubber today when I was looking for something else. You think that might do for holding those feet down? With maybe a line through the leash plug or an ez plug as backup? Big patches of Velcro might not look too flash on the board tho.

Nice work DJ. Having done this exact same thing on an surfski, i can tell you duct tape is about as good as it gets for a safe attachment to the board. If the mast is too secure it will de-laminate the board or rip a hole if hits the water hard. Velcro is ok in a large area. What i did was form thin aluminum plate to the curved shape of the deck, covered the underneath with velcro and mounted the 3 leg mast to the top of the aluminum plate which had 3 lugs bent 90 degrees to attach the 3 legs to. You could have 2 aluminum profiles, one for front one for the back with matching velcro adhered to the board. The glue on the velcro is very sticky and holds well but does break down with water exposure and sun after a while.

Getting the horizon in the center of the lens does flatten out the horizon, but the higher you go vertically above the board the more the sideways roll is pronounced, so in unstable conditions, there is a lot of camera motion and wobble. But, in good downwind conditions when on a runner it will be smooth and with good editing you can cut the wobbly stuff out.

Of course if the board is expendable, embed and glass 3 attachments in the board like FCS plugs :-)

I tried 3 way suction cups, ended up ripping a big hole in the deck of a ski. Bugger.

Is duct tape, is good.

BTW GoPro HD3 has been sighted being tested, it's more Pro than the model HD2. Looks like will be available mid year.

one of the longboarders up here did close to it but put solid wooden blocks into the tail of his board and screwd a mount directly into thast at glassed over to make water tight , he only used a thin pole.

One other thing DJ, now that you have lifted the camera higher and there is more sky, try 720p 60fps (r3 on a HD1) instead of 960(R4) now, the horizon will still be a flat line, it should reduce the amount of sky (still get your head in the frame) capture more out to the side, be much more stable video and give you the option of slowmo as well.

Thanks Rambo.. Tape is cheap and pretty easy to put on and take off after.. I'll try the 720 thing if I can work it out.
