Having a flat water paddle this morning I caught up with a friend of mine who has been looking at a SUP for her and her kids. She had done her homework and despite my pleas of going to a reputable shop and getting some advice and a demo she purchased a SUP from a long standing board manufacturer on the northern beaches.
Nothing wrong with that except for the fact the board cost $700 all up. 10'6" by 30" with a 2/3rd deck grip, carry handle and tri-fin setup. Looks like well made epoxy but definitely not from the Cobra factory. Story goes that the retailer was owed some money and settled for a truckload of these boards. Apparently they have sold several dozen of these boards in the last little while. This doesnt bode well with the whole SUP industry and really reminds me of the explosion of everyone jumping on the windsurf band wagon back in the 80's to make a quick buck.
You cant stop the get quick or flash in the pan or even the fair enough dealers but I really hope this isnt the start of a suss trend. Too many people do the right thing and work hard for little return only to have someone jump on it and benefit.

reputable shop=retailing business = more likely to benefit from low priced chinese wholesale pricing.

We should be very careful that we don't over-generalise with the quality of chinese made sups because the majority of our "reputable" and biggest selling brands are make in china.

If people are not going to surf a sup then why should they spend big dollars on a board? Why should someone spend $1500-2000 on something that will do the same(for them) as $700.

In almost every SUP shop i have been in lately there has been boards for under $1000. The industry knows that everyone has a pricepoint and will stock varying priced boards. If they stick with it, then perhaps, they will come back to them and buy a better board. It gets the poorer people into the sport

If I hadn't found my 2nd hand, good brand board I would have bought one of these cheap chinese boards. And I would be in same position as I am now- I love the sport and am about to buy a board that can take my SUP surfing to a new level.

Anyone on here ride a ****ty Kmart bike? Or do you ride a $5000 carbon fibre speed machine just to cruise around.

Ok Flame suit has been pulled on and I am awaiting the roasting.

exactly i had done alot of research on well branded boards and found the majority come from thailand cobra factory but some major brands moved into china which unknown to me, but was this for a reason of "better quality" or strictly price driven?Coz the price of these boards are still $$$.
hmm well we all know start going for the cheaper and somethings gotta give.
thats my 2 bobs worth.

My take on this is there is going to be two markets the lets give it a go market flat water non serious & the hard core surf /race market .When I started I paid $2000nz for a aircraft carrier endorsed by a well known Hawaian surfer it was terrable next came a Starboard which was a hundred times better for less money & it surfed really well .
Local shaper for me is not an option & I think most people mking custom boards are not getting good enough margins any way trying to compete with this problem (we have just had one board factory close).
The winners are going to be the likes of PSH Starboard the people doing R&D
I don't see any advancment from the likes of GSI .

Over Christmas I bought my daughter and 5-8 Maverick Fish ,full spray job , quad beautifull looking board for only $350. The shop I got it from brings in all the old stock from the factories in Indo & China.

Sweet deal I thought intill the first surf she came in with dings and depressions all over it , I just thought she got run over , no big deal **** happens I fixed it and gave it back.

The stringer is now starting to raise (both sides) and the board gets super soft when it heats up ,it looks like the foam is still reacting to heat and the board is falling apart.

This was a case of a deal to good to be true , I got what I paid for......sh!t. obviously not excess stock but a second.

Me, well sort of. I have a Chinese made Coles bike ($79) to get to the ferry/mates places/town and often leave it out over night without a care in the world. I then have a full carbon roadie for my commute and long rides.

As they say horses for courses and I totally agree with your views RE SUPs. If anything it may hopefully knock down prices of the "big brands" and even reduce the cost of windsurfing boards.

Cheers

I think its the way the worlds going unfortunately. My old boy used to Run and manage a very success fixing/wire/ manufacturing workshop in Welshpool, they would make nails, screws, rolls of wire things along those lines.
That got shut down and de-comissioned as it was cheaper for them to produce the goods in China, same quality, just cheaper to produce over there, he went there for 6 month to help set up the company and then him and all his staff were made redundant.

I dont think that everything made in china is **** quality, but when a majority of everything we buy and consume comes from there, it stands to reason that more faulty goods would come from China as they seem to dominate most of the market.

Grant I assume they were bought at the recent sale the manufacturer was having? I checked the boards out. They looked like OK boards-especially for the money compared to what else is out there at twice the price.

As others have said-nearly all the majors do their boards in China or Vietnam or Thailand-same, as you know, with the windsurf companies-and as others have said, why spend gazillions on a Naish or Starboard etc. when you can have just as much fun as a starter or non wave nazi SUPper on one of the cheaper boards-guess it shows how much of the marketing costs/middle man costs etc. of the majors are built into the sale price of their boards.

ANYONE can go to the Bentley factory (or numerous others) in China and start themselves a new SUP label-all you need is some $ and time.

Just like in windsurfing-there will be a shake out once the craze has passed-and the dust will settle and I imagine the usual suspects will be left standing with some local niche custom players.

Hello friends,
I don't think that you can generalize about boards from "China"...

In my opinion it depend from the factory where the product come from.
Many top brands manufacture in China and they make pretty good products!

Been a dealer I receive at least 2-3 e-mails from various factories in China proposing their products but already from the pics you can see that they are rip off of major brands... Price are really juicy but quality!!! No thanks...

I have an example as I saw someone importing from this "X" brand from China...
Of course I went to check the boards out, they looks ok band you can see the shape is "inspired" by major brand but the volume distribution is different and the all package looks a bit weird.....
Couple delaminates during the shipping, couple more just by staying in the shop!!
And I saw a board that they sold to a poor soul at my local repair shop that ripped the side fins including the plugs on the first time of use! Just by riding it...

So I don't think it depend where the boards come from but by the manufacturing quality!!

PS. No SUP production boards are made in Indo... Only few custom boards made by local shapers!

I know of a company here in WA who have just baught out their own brand of board and have openly admitted it is aimed at just getting people out on the water. They don't try to sell it as a high performance machine, they sell it purely on it's merits and at a price targeted for that market.

I've only just bought my first board which I wanted for....you guessed it....cruising around the river, putting the kids on it as well and learning the ropes in micro beachies down the track.
I've read through all the forums 100's of pages, this one and standup zones and talked to as many people as possible, including sup'ers I've met and shop staff. Taken in the shop peoples sales talks and read reviews and let it all sink in.
I come from a lifetime surfing background and was keen to buy a good quality board.
I was amazed at the amount of pop outs (whether made in China or Thailand) and the willingness of every shop to sell them.
I tried to find a good second hand cruisier but was un-impressed with the condition of used boards shops were trying to sell me for around $1000 or more.
So I went to see Tully at Noosa surf works as I knew they made boards there.
They also do a range of Surftechs.
I ended up with an 11'4 diamondtail cruiser shaper with a 2+1 set up in eps/epoxy brand new for $1250.
He also did a great deal on deck pads pieces so I could do my own deck grip on a budget and a carbon paddle for a great price. He even threw in a free legrope.
So I was set up with a hand shaped board with a good shape that will allow me to keep it for a long time and was locally made.
My wife also wanted a sup so ended up buying an M8 10'4" (which I'd assume is Chinese made) which has a Cutch (local shaper) designed blank brand new for a princely sum of $700 new. The original new price on the M8 was (gulp) $2100.
I'll soon find out if I only get what I paid for.
This will be only paddled on flat water by my wife but has a planshape that will let me surf it when I'm ready.
The day I bought it I made sure the local shops didn't have anything decent used for her from any big name brands but they were all unimpressive in both condition and price.
So I've tried both local hand shaped and pop out. It will be interesting to see how both stand the test of time.
