Hey Serg,
I saw a few boards from Chris in the rack at Greenline. There was a few 9'8"s and one about the 9' mark and I've seen one there that was 8'10" ( All Billy models ) but do your self a favour and call the guy to have a good chat. He is a true craftsman and it's a great experience working with him.
All the best

Have to agree Chris's boards look really nice very pulled in on the nose and tail a real performance board.

Chris is a 'custom' shaper. There is no catalogue.

This is an old fashioned notion I know but what you do is talk to him, tell him what you are riding, what you like and dislike about it and where you want to go with the next board and you discuss what will work best for you.

At the end of that and you deciding colour, logo's etc he shapes a board thinking of all of the things that you told him completely unique and just for you. It will be called the Serg Model and will be written under the glass on the board.

I still don't understand why so many people can not see the added value in this process.

I also find it hard to believe that more people dont ride custom boards as everyone has different weights heights styles etc ???

Have to say a big thanks to Scott and Jo from greenline for taking me out on a 9'4" Chris Garett (set up as 2+1) and a 9' Mctavish (set up as a quad)

To answer all the comments regarding getting a custom board from Chris or Dale etc. I only started surfing last april, my first SUP being my first ever surfboard. I have a 10'7" Takayama by surftech. Ive been riding this alot and having a ball, but also surfing with a mate that rides a 9"3' Naish.... so have wanted a shorter board for a different style of surfing. I'm keeping the Takay. I don't know what this or that does on a surfboard, don't know what my style is.............but I'm having fun :)

Its not about not seeing the addded value in going the custom route, trust me most things I own I have customised......its about crawling before I walk, let alone run. A good sound base on what has been done is the stepping stone to improvement.

Although I spent most of the time on the CG, the Mac 9' is a great board. The only negs on the Mac (FOR ME) are the deck grip and the handle hole postion. It was a bit harder to paddle onto waves than the CG, but the waves were a bit fuller towards the end as the tide was coming in. It is a different board to the CG but its suprisingly nibble for what it LOOKS like. Its just different to the CG, and for what I felt I wanted I chose the CG

Why not just get a 9'3 Naish like your good mate i know where you can even get one. Benny does ride it well though

It took me good year before I ordered my first custom , the good part a about production boards is you get the same design in different lengths and you get a really good feel for them but as you progress you realise they are made for the masses and not for you , the fact that you are looking at Garretts suggest that you really are looking for something performance based to suit you height and weight.

Naish , Starboard & PSH have an excellent range of production boards but for me I always find myself in the middle of all there boards , my advice is try before you buy if you love buy it , if not order a custom.

Paul J: yeah I have ridden Benny's a few time, plus Woodsy's PSH and Lara's PSH. All good boards. I have wanted to try the CG since I first saw them, but wasnt ready at the time. I think there are alot of good boards out there and nothing wrong with the production boards.....Benny shows what can be done, and the Mac will suprise a few people to. I just wanted something different and something I liked. I think its good for mates to ride different boars, cause at least we can ride each others and see the differences :) I have only seen 2 other Takay's on the coast and havent seen anyone ridding CG, I know Billy does but dont know him.

Piros: I have tried a few, but like I said, not knowing what things do what on a surfboard, I figured it best to buy something I rode and liked before changing things I dont know about. I can surf this board for a year or 2, then go to Chris or Dale and use it as a base. There wasnt much point using my Takay as a base as I was going to a different style of board.

to all, take this how you will, but there are guys surfing better on production boards than some of us ever will on customs. There are guys getting customs made which may not be better than production boards, not because of the shaper but because of what the customer has asked for.............
