Glad to read the (hopefully) happy outcome...
As said, we have to cope with what we got in the gene lottery...
Myself, I try to train at the gym while monitoring my heart rate, and learn to recognize "by feel" the upper limit for my age (170 for me). This is one of the factors that made me stop Windsurfing: I wasn't able anymore to manage all the gear to waterstart after a fall in the waves in a tight spot while staying under the max heart rate...

I couldn't imagine if it played out differently - All that knowledge would virtually disappear, it would be left to SUP historians to piece together the best possible fin set ups for a given board.
Glad to hear you are up and about and back on the way to recovery.
