In Tassie we have a system where members pay a membership fee to join a boardriders club , and then to be able to compete in state titles pay again to join surfing Tasmania for surfing Tas membership . This in a system where surfing Tasmania oversees the clubs and the clubs pay to be affiliated with surfing Tasmania .
To me a better system would be to pay once which includes state and club membership ( the clubs are affiliated to surfing Tasmania anyway ) . The only drawback I can see is that this could lead to an increase in club membership fees .

Wondering in the other states do you pay one fee to join your surfing organization , or same as here where you pay to join your board riders club , then pay to join the other board riders clubs to go in their comps , then pay your state body to compete in their events .

Yes in Victoria we pay club separately from Surfing Victoria. We feel that this is appropriate as we have over 130 people joining the club but less than 30 entering state titles. Why should everyone pay for state membership if they don't need it?

I've been involved in a few sports at club and state level and surfing is the only one that I have come across where you need to be a member of the state body to compete in one of their events when you are already a member of a club that is affiliated with the state body, can't see why memberships fees should increase when you pay an entrance fee to go in the state comp anyway.

Plus one , the way I see it you are paying the state surfing body when you pay your club membership , to then have to pay the state surfing body again to enter state comps is double dipping

Ditto for QLD!

As for other sporting bodies... SUP isn't the only one with 2 fees - when I paddled a season with the local outrigger club, you had to pay club fees and AOCRA (national body) fees (for insurance) just to be a member of the club. Both fees were significantly more expensive that the reapective club/state fees we pay for SUP - but the club fee did include use (and maintenance) of the canoes and coaching so difference in club fee is justified.

For my local clubs:
Total club+national for outrigger = $270/year (plus race fees if you want to race)
Total club+state for sup = $110/year (SUPSA+SQLD plus race fees for state/nationals titles)
Total club only for sup = $60/year (SUPSA - plus race fees for non qualifying entry to state titles & associated events)

Really we don't have it too bad.

I agree Ali our fees our ridiculously cheap . Our membership is $10 , I think PBBR is $20 , from memory state membership is either $30 or $50 . I just think it is confusing and would simplify the system if your club membership covered all .

In some instances the clubs
and individuals are affiliating
with the state/aust body just
to ensure that they are covered
by insurance .. but what does
this insurance actually cover ?
and does it actually exist ?

We've asked for a copy of the
policy but havn't seen it yet .
if it exists it can't be too hard
to flop one copy off .. I've never paid
for an insurance policy yet without
seeing in writing .. this being the
exception.

I suppose the true test of that will be when someone gets injured in one of the comps and puts a claim in . I think I read where Lacey may have had a bit of a bad experience trying to claim through his insurance recently after his heart attack .

The worry could be for those organizing the comps ,mostly all volunteers , if the person doing the suing comes after them .
