I can't believe how many brands were represented and the money invested in cars, tents, displays etc to show them off.

I guess everyone is assuming that like Billabong T-shirts that everyone in Australia will buy one and that the market is 20 times the size it ever can be. This is not the USA!

One thing that is always true though: Business people are only prepared to lose money for so long, as soon as they realize that the return does not match the investment they'll be out and it will go back to be what it always was. That is, a couple of big brands and the local guys keeping them honest. The other thing that happens is that many of these additional brands will sell off stuff real cheap as they quit out from the stock that nobody wanted to buy.

Just my crystal ball view, I could be wrong. Let's see over the next year or so.

Yep, what i find funny is. A trailer worth $3000 does that same job as a trailer worth $25K! People go figure.
Screw a trailer, i want a TRUCK like some of the companies at BOP in California, NOT!

I'm surprised at the response to these companies,

I would have thought that all SUP enthusiasts and especially someone in a retail position would appreciate the effort put in by these companies to promote the sport and their brands in an attempt to assist their retailers.

I am personally a fan of seeing sports potraying a professional and positive image. I am also a huge fan of having a wide choice of product when it comes to finding the equipment that suits me best.

At the end of the day lets just hope that these companies are in it for the right reasons and that is that they are there for the paddlers and pushing the sport along so events like the Corona Classic go on for another 30 years.

Overall I think the people on the water will be the judge of that

seems that there is alot of different brands but not alot of difference...all have a raceboard or 3, all mostly target the 9-11foot surf sup range and have the odd below 9 footer...

good to see more companies but would be nice to see some difference....

No offense to any of the companies that represented brands at this trade show, especially yours Bam Bam, you seem to have an affiliation with Angulo.

I just think that people get a little sucked in to investing into the surf industry. Yes, Billabong makes a billion dollars per year. An interesting number would be how much of this revenue actually comes from people that are active participants in surfing or any other ocean activity at all. My guess would be a long way under 5%. Some of my past employers are the biggest in the surfing hardware field and as market leaders they make a very small amount of money in comparison even with global distribution.

Of all of the brands that were represented at this trade show how many actually obtained any accurate information on the number of SUP boards sold per year in Australia, the unique points of difference, marketing plan etc to the brand they were to represent and the resultant sales, gross and net profits??? I'll take a guess and say not many....... I'd say most of them just seen what they thought was a great opportunity to make some money and combine it with some lifestyle. To sell boards you'll need the retailers to want them, how many brands will the SUP retailers actually need?

I have seen a lot of brands come and go over time, for the people that plan to make their millions from this growing sport I just hope that they've done their research.

The great thing about the high number of retailers , is the prices will continue to come down. The wheat will sort itself out from the chaff as they say , and no doubt their will be lots of brands go.And the end of the day the those brands that offer quality , perfromance and good old fashioned service will thrive , the el cheapos or those with just an eye on the money , will cause grief in the short term but soon die off.

I'd prefer if the industry was truely local, local guys shaping boards to best suit the local conditions and the local riders ability.
boards made from locally sourced materials.
local feedback and support.
kind of what surfing used to be.
before 'companies' brought container loads of biege type boards and sold them with huge mark ups and spun marketing campaigns to sell an idealism or glossy magazine lifestyle.

current industry type 'support' for events like the MAMBO are for the most part pretty self serving.
I'd imagine that the mambo would still be going thirty years strong even if it was still just a bunch of dudes meeting up once a year at merimbula to catch up, have a barbie hang out at the back of some dudes windsurfing trailler and hopefully get some wind action.
authentic marker pen comemerative t-shirts and all.
