Hi

what is the correct way to transport your SUP on the roof rack?

Fin facing the the sky or the Fin facing the ground like when you ride the SUP on the lake....currently I have transport it with fin facing the ground..

What sort of board is it? I have a Fanatic Fly Race and due to the shape of the front deck side of the board (V), I had to transport it fin down until I had cut some foam supports that allow me to transport it fin upwards.

IMO always fin up and nose forward unless there's any reason you can't.. and straps (not ropes or bungee) firm but not tight.

I'm not a pro and not ashame of looking like a rookie.

immitating something you dont have or pretend to be someone you are not is not my style...

I drive a ****ty old car when I was young and poor without taking on debt, when my mates borrow to buy new car....the rest is history

This book should open a lot of people eyes on status symbol and trying to be something you are not

ok so you may not care about looks, great. But if you want to transport safely and with the least amount of drag and upward pressure on the board go nose down, fins up (remember to check clearence of fins to garage door)

back on topic ...

I've always carried my boards, of any description, fin up.

this way if any unforseen bumpiness causes the roof racks to damage the board, it is to the deck and not the all important bottom surface of the board.

Instersting. Actually if you want least amount of drag and upward pressure on the board it is fins up and tail to the front of the car.

Think about the profile of a board with the nose forward and fins up, it shares some of the same characteristics as a wing. When driving at speed this will create lift and upward pressure on your straps. That lift also creates some drag.

Nose to the back and fins up doesn't induce any lift and by the time air flow hits the downward facing nose at the back of the car two things are happening, the slight deflection is pushing on the rear strap levering the board to the rack, but mostly the air is so broken up by the board, the racks, the roof line of the car and deflection from the windscreen etc it is actually doing nothing. So you have neither lift nor great downward force.

Do a search on the internet, you will find more people agree with this than disagree.

i believe at the speed a car does, the nose down is better.

now nose forward if your going down the coast or tail forward if your heading north.

that was the golden rule way back

It's fin up unless you plan to drive thru shopping centre carpark heading to Ananconda. Yes, I nearly learnt the hard way. It was a touch embarrassing to ask 20 cars to reverse as I couldn't fit under height bar.
