Does it matter if the paddle creaks a little...It's a Kialoa Shaka....fairly new....doesn't appear to affect the power or stroke....but has recently developed a creak??? Feedback appreciated....

Hi Lowers,

I had a Southpoint Crowbar that creaked all the time. Its still in the shed somewhere. I gave it some serious work outs and it didnt fail.

where did u drill

if i did drill, i'd prob go as far south as poss and just leave it open to drain all the time.... i dont feel good about taking a drill to the shaka though,,, i might just live with the swish..

i've had the problem before. i drilled a small hole near the handle. the idea being that end should spend more time out of the water.shake the water out. i taped it up with sparkies tape. i figured if i didn't fix the water leak, i can use the hole to drain it again
ps. i assuming the water is able to get to the shaft

The water I had was in the middle of the blade so thats where I drilled and the water ran out.

It appeaed that the center of the paddle was filled with foam and there must have been an air bubble in the middle. I couldnt find where the water got it but by putting the epoxy in under pressure it seemed to fix it.

Windy, just after I got my Shaka Pu'u I was paddling hard after a wave and it felt like the paddle had cracked. It actually made a popping noise and I felt the reverberations in the paddle. This has never happened again, but my paddle has leaked since. This hasnt been much of an issue until lately--now the water has actually added noticeable weight to my paddle.

I'm pretty sure there is a slight crack in it that only opens up just slightly when paddling. I have taped the joint between the blade and the handle, so pretty sure it isnt leaking through there.

I asked Lummers about this at a function earlier in the year and he suggested exactly what Phil has recommended. I just havent had the cajones to drill into a $500 paddle yet..................

I have kept pretty quiet on this front, but does anyone else think this is more of a warranty issue than a "fix it yourself" issue? Mine popped and was reported to the retailer within a few weeks of purchase.

I'm still pretty miffed about replacing multiple deck pads on my WindSup(ready for another one now) and spending my time fixing other peoples problems on my dime/time for a product I paid top dollar for. I had certainly rather have someone else (responsible for damages!) drilling holes into my paddle.

Just a thought........Ronnie

Could be that the epoxy where the shaft has been glued in has cracked internally...just a thought.

I think the shafts and blades arrive in Oz separately and they get glued together here.

Once the shaft is glued into the blade there will sometimes be a temperature difference and air inside will either want to get sucked in or blown out.

This may cause a tiny air canal or bubble.. It may only be as thin as a hair but when a hot paddle is dropped into cold water the air in the paddle will shrink and cause air (and water) to get sucked inside.

I have about half a teaspoon on water in the blade or shaft of my Shaka Pu'u and it's been like that for a long time.

One day I'll let it dry out.. then slide up the shrink wrap thing that covers the join between the blade and shaft.. and then run a smear of 5 minute aroldite around the join... I'm sure that will fix it.

I've paddled with at least 20 different Kialoa paddles and never heard one creak.. I'm not saying that it doesn't happen tho..

I'll ask Dave Chun from Kialoa about this creaking and see what he thinks.
