Just heard on the radio the police are asking for people to come forward who may know the surfer. Must not be able to identify the poor bugger. Hope he comes out of it all good.

Just saw the news as well. Hope he is going to be ok.
never a good thing to happen and the really stupid thing is that the surf is small and visibility good today.

Everyone knows that cuurumbin is a bar. Which means that boats dont have to stop to slow down to 6knots until they enter the rock wall.

Wrong place wrong time all right, poor bugger.

However it was so busy with swimmers, surfers, paddlers etc.. out there this morning.

Seems like it was always gonna happen, just a matter of time at the alley.

I've had boats scream past me within 2m! but im always checking to see what's coming and going in the surf at the alley.

Hope he is ok.

He was in the boat that speed past you guys this morning Angie (which caused Emma to end up in the drink). We saw the proceedings at the boat ramp with the paramedics as we were leaving winders this morning and it didn't look good.

I just read that he passed away in hospital. I feel for his family and friends, certainly not great to have seen the attention he was receiving and find this to be the outcome.

According to the news the boat driver is also being treated for shock, in all likely hood a straight out accident in which no one is at major fault will now be affecting two families so greatly, such a shame and my thoughts go out to both.

i saw a bit of a bit of this in the water, didn't realise what happened. a big police launch was motoring around for a bit too.

it's tragedy that this happened and i can only imagine the grief the families would be feeling

After seeing boats motor in at almost full throttle it's sad to say that it was an accident waiting to happen however I often wondered whether the VMR guys in that lookout tower ever advise boaties of the quantity and location of people in the water.

I doubt that anything would start to help with the grief the family must be feeling, but the comments here show that in times of need the line between SUP, Short and Longboard disappears.

Maybe the best thing we can do to help as a surf community is how do we stop it happening again!

From Currumbin Waters, so well and truly local and likely that many of us that frequent the Alley have been out with this guy at one time or another.

Watch the state and local politicians now…

This accident has been a long time coming with the lack of adequate dredging on the creek bars on the Gold Coast (Tweed, Currumbin, Talle). It is very difficult to negotiate most of the sand bars in these boats. When you add in all of the people in the water, especially at places like the alley, it is a miracle that this has not happened sooner. The fact that the banks have been so good at the Alley lately tells you everything. Being surfers we love the banks but the boaties have been complaining for a long time now.

Sad day.

To try and put a good spin on this, at least he passed away in a place he loved partcipating in a sport he enjoyed. My thoughts go out to his family! May he rest in peace.

I don't live on the coast but I'm surfing at Currumbin every weekend, gutted to hear that someone was hit by a boat. I know they don't have to slow down until they hit the breakwater but some of them are real idiots screaming in and out of there, especially on busy days, swimmers, kids, learn to surf groups etc. I really hope that this is a wake up call to both boaties and water pedestrians. I'm so so sad for his family!

Shocking news. Something has to be done. It is a ridiculous place for boats - IMO.

it's a hard call there. as a boatie said on the news, when there are waves about, coming in and out, then they decide to go, they've got to go.

i think mikemans more on to the problem. lets not make this a finger pointing exercise at the moment please. this has hit the local community pretty hard

Mike once again is on the money.

In normal creek conditions the channel runs along the breakwall and then does a dog leg out and around so that boats can access what is normally a bit of a no mans land for the crowds, learners etc between the Alley proper and Laceys.

At the moment the sand is so choked that the breakwall is the shallowest part of the creek. This leaves boaties no choice but to run up the middle of the Alley and then try to go around the end of the shallower than normal bank coming off the rock and extending over to the wall. There is usually a more pronounced gutter and this allows the boats to navigate the bar without coming too close to regular surfers.

You'd have to think that these conditions played a part in today's unfortunate accident. What a sad day for his family and our beautiful area. Let's just hope that something is done to monitor the bar and maintain it despite the political hot potato that it has become.
