I just got a new Werner Spanker Carbon-Fibre paddle to replace my GSI glass one which I broke.
The Werner is about 86" long and I want to cut it to my size which is about 79" (i am 6ft or 72" tall).
My question is; can I just go ahead and cut the CF with a hacksaw or do I have to do some sort of special pre-prep or post-procedure to keep the CF in the best possible condition? ie glueing or sealing the cut. I do not want to be in a situation where the individual fibres of carbon are unravelling (if that is even possible) because of a sloppy cut or poor finish.
Mark the cut on the shaft with electrical tape wrapped around the shaft on the paddle side of the cut
THE CUT Using a hacksaw cut up right beside the tape As you near the end of the cut make your cut strokes more vertical and reduce the pressure on the blade. Finish the cut using as little force as possible on the saw. This way you avoid the CARBON GLASS tearing.
PREPARATION Score the top section of the shaft (where the handle will make contact) with 120 grade sand paper or similar Put the foam plug (supplkied with KIALOA) in the top of the shaft (this stops water getting in)
The handle is shaped to fit your palm. Check what feels comfortable for you so that when alignedthe paddle blade is angled away from you towards the front of the board.
Determine what feels most comfortable for you and NOTE this alignment If you are UNSURE about handle alignment check with your dealer. Prepare the epoxy. Be generous but don’t overdo it. It can get messy so be ready to mop up excess resin.
Place paddle horizontal, apply resin to top of shaft where you scored it and inside/on handle Place handle on/in top of shaft. Clean up excess resin around handle. It can just be wiped of with a CLEAN rag Use ACETONE/THINNERS if it is really messy
Place paddle on the ground or against a wall to line handle parallel to blade.
DOUBLE CHECK ALIGNMENT Check that the handle is in the right position with the blade angled away from you towards the front of the board.
