Hi Sue,

The new DC16's have an identical steering system as the F-16. I know of one on the Gold Coast (Iron Phil - recently paddled his in the Molokai race) and not too sure if there many 2nd hand ones around. To get one sent from Maui would cost $4k+

I've not even seen any of these big race boards.

It could be a little way off but there's talk of a big race board coming from Naish..(about the 17' size)...I think Naish are taking racing very seriously.

Dave Kalama won that last big race in Hawaii on a big SIC board..I'm not sure if it was a 16' or 18' board.

Iron Phil brought 2 back from Molokai but not to sure if he is selling them. I think one is second hand

Thanks guys for your replies. I think I will now leave it up to my husband to decide what and which board/s he wants to get. He is going over to Molokai in Oct for 9 man outriggers so he may be able to check out an F-16 while there and maybe bring one back (A problem now with Qantas, or at least Jet star). We couldn't bring a 10' C4 back for Hawaii in May with Jetstar (The domestic part). Had to fly Qantas to get it home.

We attempted a downwind yesterday as conditions were great. We only had our 11" boards. I couldn't even get out off the beach due to the huge sweep and shore dump and now have a massive bruises on my leg from my fins smashing me. Danny managed to get out and do the paddle. I drove the truck home very disappointed with myself. Can't imagine how hard a 16" must be to get out of a beach break ?? Wish it was as easy as Hawaii Kai to start.

DC-16 vs F-16 vs F-18 vs LB Penetrator vs C4 Vortice XP

I've been paddleboarding for 2 months now and has been a real transformation, haven't touched my bicycle for 1 and a half months after the venom of Stand Up Paddleboarding has set in.

Where I put out during the week I have to stay in the harbor or inside the breakwater due to swells and wind chop coming in from the west (I'm in California with a west facing beach/harbor). When it's not too windy I can get the 11'6" Naish to go upwind and into the swells, when turning back for home I'm usually wiped out and spend time on my knees until getting inside the breakwater wall.

What is the popular definition of a downwind board? What is it designed for?

Will these "downwind boards" do well when heading into the swells?

I'm looking for a board for the open ocean to go up and down wind, with and against the swells. With the Naish I'm looking busier than a one armed man hanging wallpaper.

Found this blog yesterday, great to see the discussions. I'm in it for the fun, the challenge and physical therapy

I've only had a few paddles on my DC16 including one 4-1/2 session , I love it and can't fault it but I have'nt even seen a F16 in the flesh.I spoke to Dale Chapman yesterday about his paddle on the weekend with his DC16 and a F16 .The one noteable difference was the DC16 was alot more stable and more suited to our
Australian conditions.

The full carbon version of the DC16 complete with rudder retails for $3,300 for a 12kg board and it can be made in 2 weeks.

Sue tell Danny he is welcome to try mine any time as I'm 93kg and it floats me fine so it should hold the big fella no problems.

Thanks Rob..will do. We be coming down to the GC the week after he does Molokai. Coming for the Coolangatta Gold and then also the next weekend for the Gold Coast Relay. He has only done one 15 min downwind on his 11'6" Timpone. He's not sure he's into it yet as he just loves to surf. Probably all those years of doing OC1 downwinds and races. I'll let him know though. Thanks.
